The Supernatural Fruit of the Holy Spirit – Part 8 Lawson and Aaron Perdue

  Praise God friends, it’s so good to have you with us today, we’re talking about the supernatural fruit of the Holy Spirit, and you don’t want to miss this teaching. We’re gonna be talking about meekness, the fruit of meekness. What does that really represent? How is it manifested? And what are the promises attached to meekness? You don’t want to miss it today. Blessings.

 

  Friends, I’m so glad that you’re here, and I’ve got Aaron and we’re sharing on the supernatural fruit of the Holy Spirit. And we’re talking about meekness. Aaron, there is so much confusion about what true meekness really is. Meekness is not weakness. You know, that Moses actually wrote, and Moses was a great leader, and I believe this is an attribute of great leaders. Now, he may not have always been that way, but I believe that he learned this, and he wrote, Moses actually wrote the book of Numbers, and in Numbers 12:3 it says that Moses was very meek above all the men that were on the face of the earth. So Moses recognized who he was, and he recognized the talent, or ability, or character, that God had put on the inside of him. So I have heard that meekness is power or strength under perfect control. And I believe that comes from Jesus. Jesus was meek, and Jesus had power and strength, but he, it was under perfect control.

 

  And, one reason why people can operate in that fruit of meekness is because they really trust God. They really know that God loves them. And when things aren’t looking, perfect, you know, coming from other people, their ultimate trust is in God.

 

  So it flows right off the back of faith or faithfulness.

 

  And meekness, I like that.

 

  And really, you know, we talked about faithfulness yesterday, we’re talking about meekness, you know, sometimes called gentleness, today, and self-control tomorrow. So these last three fruit of the Holy Spirit, supernatural fruit that comes from the Holy Spirit, faith, faithfulness, meekness, and self-control, they’re really three of the most rare fruit to find. And these three, last three fruit of the spirit, deal with relationship with yourself, and because it’s a self relational fruit, it’s not always easy to tell if people have these things. It’s not always easy to tell if someone’s actually being meek, or if they’re, you know,

 

  It’s sometimes, it’s a false humility that people put on.

 

  Yeah, there can be, yeah. Sometimes people can present a false humility, but there’s actually two ways to tell if people have these last three fruit of the spirit. And, the first one is time. Time will tell. Time will tell if someone’s really faithful, time will tell if someone’s really meek, and time will tell if someone really operates in self-control, time will tell. That’s the first test. The second test is to see how people react when they don’t get what they want.

 

  And, you know, especially with a meekness, you know, in any relational setting, whether it be at work, you know, at home with your family, with your kids, with your, you know, spouse, maybe it’s at church, church is a very relational setting. In any relational setting, you’re not always gonna get what you want.

 

  That’s just how it is. Well, I mean the Bible says that love suffers long is in kind, and is kind in, first Corinthians 13 verse four, that’s King James. But, again, are we long suffering? And that kind of goes into this aspect of meekness, not getting what you want. You know, I’ve heard about certain people that they were like a gentle giant. Andrew Wommack is a great person who, I mean, he is a, you know, has a ministry, really tremendous ministry, and yet, he’s very humble, to me. I know one time I was bringing Jesse Deplantis down, from Charis Bible College when he’d be teaching it, and I was taking him back to the airport, and you were riding in the back, but Jesse asked me a question about a scripture, and you’ve always, since you’ve been a young person, had a very tremendous insight, into a discernment of certain people and certain things. And you’ve actually told me with certain people, actually, “Dad, they’re not gonna stay here long, they’re gonna be a problem”, and it’s been true. So you’ve actually operated in a lot of discernment for a long time, and you’re sometimes better at seeing people than I am. I kind of just love everybody. And I think we’re supposed to love everybody, but, we’re learning some things. You know, the Bible actually talks about in leadership, you’re not supposed to put a person, a novice in leadership. And, and I, so, and we see that problem. We talked about it in a different way, but, when we were bringing Jesse, Jesse asked me this scriptural question, and you told me later, you know, when you consider the size of Jesse’s ministry and the size of our ministry, that’s really amazing. And you said, you know, he wasn’t asking, to be cool or whatever, he was asking because he really wanted to know what you thought about it. And I know, actually Jesse’s called me on the phone, before, and asked me certain, you know, doctrinal questions, because he knows we teach from a position of grace. I believe Jesse has a great revelation of grace. I’ve recognized that actually for years and years, even when I was at Lester Sumrall’s, that Jesse would come and teach and he actually understood grace. And, there’s people who manifest grace, who maybe not, really don’t understand it, but Jesse had a good understanding, I could tell, of grace, just by the way he taught. But there’s some things that people have said, who claim to be messengers of grace, who really don’t, really don’t, aren’t telling the truth. ‘Cause they’re kind of making grace something it isn’t. So Jesse’s asked me some of those questions, but, Andrew Wommack, Jesse Deplantis, I believe they, they both really reflect that meek attitude, power, strength under control.

 

  And, you know, we talked about, how that there’s promises attached to these fruit of the spirit and the promise attached to meekness, because it’s such a rare fruit, it’s actually enormous. You can’t even measure it. You know, Jesus said in Matthew five, verse five, “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.” You know, think how huge the earth is. He’s basically saying, when you operate in meekness, when you bear that fruit.

 

  We’re gonna rule and reign with Jesus.

 

  You know, and he’s quoting Psalm 37:11. So Jesus knew this was a promise in scripture, a promise from Psalm, about, you know, the meek inheriting the earth. And, you know, meekness, it’s not weakness, you know, sometimes, it’s operating, you don’t just have to unleash everything that you know,

 

  No.

 

  everything that you have.

 

  And I think you learn and you grow in it. Aaron, I have a lot of biblical knowledge. Even started pastoring when I was just 23, just before I was 24. I could win most scriptural arguments at the age of 23 or four years old, but I can tell you I learned, right, and I even knew that then, sometimes it’s better, to rather than to win this battle, you might lose this battle, but win the war. Because there’s, the Bible actually talks about this in second Timothy two. It says, “foolish and unlearned questions avoid knowing that they gender strives. And the servant of the Lord must not strive, but be able to teach.” Right, and he talks about kind of that meek attitude, and he says, if we can, actually, I’ll read that, at the end of second Timothy two. It took me a few years to really, you know, of pastoring full time, to really get this down in practice. But, I believe I learned it, you know, pretty soon. But, but he says this, he says, the sermon of the Lord, this is second Timothy 2:24, “must not strive, but be gentle to all men able to teach and patient, in meekness,” talking about this fruit of meekness, “instructing those who oppose themselves, if per adventure, God will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.” So sometimes, you may be able to win in a question situation, an argument, but you might, you might win that argument and lose the war. So he says, sometimes you just avoid those questions, and you be gentle and you just keep gently teaching people and being meek about it. So that possibly God would give them repentance, so they would acknowledge the truth, and recover themselves out of the snare of the devil. He says, in other words, there are people that are getting themselves in a snare of the devil because they don’t really know the truth, who are taken captive by him at his will. So that’s powerful.

 

  Yeah, and you know, we were talking about just how, how this inheritance for meekness it’s so incredible. And I think because the inheritance for it is so incredible, the enemy really tries to attack people in this area. And really the opposite of meekness, is pride. And, I just see a lot of people get caught up in pride,

 

  and, you know, when they don’t have their own way you really see that there was pride, there’s more fruit of pride,

 

  than fruit of meekness. I said the two indicators for whether people are meek or not is, you know, time will tell, but also what happens if you don’t get what you want,

 

  and when people sometimes don’t get what they want, you see, that there’s pride kind of going on in the background there. And, you know, the enemy really tries to devour people with pride, in the body of Christ today. First Peter five, starting in verse five, it says, “likewise, you younger people submit yourselves to your elders.” A lot of people don’t like the word submission. I was joking when I was preaching on this, and said, you know, pastor Lawson’s gonna do a, a big series on several, for several Sundays on, the subject of submission. So come one, come many, come all. You know most people,

 

  And I said I’m not gonna

 

  run away when they hear

 

  do that.

 

  the word submit, but you see it a lot in scripture. Paul writes a lot about submitting to one another.

 

  People don’t understand what it really is. And, you know, I know that people just sometimes just, they just hate the word. And so I’m very careful about how I approach some of those things. But it’s scriptural. And in, actually it’s Ephesians five verse 20 or 21, it says, “submit yourselves one to another, in the fear of the Lord.”

 

  It just makes the anointing flow so much better. You know, yesterday we had five of our, you know, top singers singing on a Sunday morning, and it was a big day, and I was trying to help the main worship leader who was, you know, assigned to lead on that Sunday, figure out how to navigate using so many talented people, and it worked out that like everyone got to lead. But he just said, you know, do, this is when I was texting with him, trying to, you know, we had like, another singer came in, a few days before we had to change things. And he just said, whatever you want,

 

  And that’s actually a really powerful, you know, phrase, to say to some. It means like, hey, I just want this to work, I want it to happen. It’s not about, it’s not about me.

 

  You know, I pray that prayer, Aaron.

 

  And that’s kind of a rare thing. Hey, whatever you want.

 

  I pray that prayer to the Lord, Lord, what, whatever you want.

 

  What do you. What is, what does Jesus really want? And my main point for meekness, was, you can’t be self-seeking and Christ seeking.

 

  You know, I just had a deal where we had some people here, and it’s about, you know, something being taken care of here at the church, and there was something I wasn’t even gonna mention, and they just came and said, “Hey, we’re gonna pay for this.” And you know, it’s probably about $16,000 extra. And I said, well, do it if you want to, you don’t have to. I’m not making an issue about that. And, you know, it’s just part of that’s giving something to God and letting, when you know people have the right heart, and the right spirit, you can trust them. And, it’s a situation where, I feel like the church has really been abused for a period of time, but God brought two very good Godly people, believers, and they had the right heart. And when they have the right heart, listen, I don’t want to abuse that.

 

  Yeah, and you know, going back to first Peter five, “likewise, you younger people submit yourselves to your elders Yes, all of you be submissive to one another. Be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” So God’s power really flows where there’s humility and meekness. “Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon him, for he cares for you.” So it’s really about just trusting in God ultimately, knowing that he loves you. And I love verse eight and nine here, “be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary, the devil, walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” So how does he devour people? In context it’s talking about pride. The devil really devours people with pride. Pride will cause people to, to not be sober, to really be drunk, and just, just not thinking clearly, not really walking in a straight line.

 

  History will prove that out. And Aaron, it’s really interesting because if you take that and put that with the end of second Timothy chapter two, that I just read, it says, if people, you know, do the right thing, they can recover their selves from the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him, at his will. And pride will get you in a place you don’t want to be. And so that, that’s really great teaching. We’re gonna come back after this break and we’re gonna continue to talk about the supernatural fruit of meekness, and there’s some great revelation that we’re gonna share.   How many times have we been in a place where we’ve suffered a great loss, a great difficulty, a great problem, and maybe we didn’t even realize it, but Jesus was right there with us, all the time. In fact, the scripture says that he will never leave us, and he will never forsake us. Thank God, even when we don’t feel it, he’s there, so many times. Friends, it’s so good to have you, with us, and staying with us. We’re continuing to talk about meekness. We’ve been talking about pride, and this scripture keeps coming to me that, you know, pride’s the opposite of meekness, but only by pride comes contention.

 

  And you know what, if you’re angry and mad all the time, you gotta check your attitude. Because it’s, there’s some pride going on somewhere.

 

  Mm hmm, that’s true. And, you know, God’s very much attracted to the fruit of meekness. And, I kind of wanna talk about first Peter three. Starting in verse three. And, this subject of meekness is mentioned here, but it says, “Do not let your adornment be merely outward.” So he’s not saying to not take care of your outward appearance,

 

  you know, he’s speaking to women in particular here, but he’s saying, he’s not saying, you know, you can’t do these things, you can’t care about your outward appearance. He’s actually saying, don’t let it merely be this thing. So it’s kind of a given that you take care of your outward appearance. “Do not let your adornment be merely outward, arranging the hair, wearing gold or putting on of fine apparel.” So it’s actually, he’s saying, it’s a given that, that you know, women, and even men, this applies to men too, you’re gonna take care of your hair, you’re gonna cut your hair, comb it, you’re gonna wear, you know, nice clothing, you know, wear jewelry, these things are fine. But the main thing is, what’s, what are you putting on. Are you putting on the fruit of the spirit, especially meekness, “rather let it be the hidden person of the heart.” And we talked about how faithfulness, meekness, self-control, these are, deal with your relationship with yourself. So it’s a hidden thing, right? The hidden person of the heart,

 

  It’s talking about the spiritual man.

 

  is deep within you.

 

  The spiritual man, is more important than the natural man. The inward man, is more important, than the outward man.

 

  So first Peter three, verse four, “let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle, or meek,” you know, in the King James says, “a meek and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” So there’s this fruit of meekness. It’s extremely precious, in the sight of God. “For in this manner, in former times, the holy woman who trusted in God also adorn themselves being submissive to their own husbands.” So a lot of people hate that term submission, but it’s really an attitude of the heart. It’s a fruit of the spirit. It says that, “Sarah obeyed at Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.” And I love that in verse seven, it doesn’t just talk about wives, it also talks about husbands, and how husbands are to be. You know, the Bible is not anti-woman. Wherever the Bible has flourished, women have flourished.

 

  And whenever the Bible gives instruction to wives, it also gives instruction to husbands.

 

  Right, and people need to realize this, you know, Jesus Christ did more to elevate the position of a woman, than any man ever on the planet. And so if you think that, you know, this feminist movement, is against, Jesus did more to elevate women’s position.

 

  Well, and you really see

 

  Christian nations.

 

  how a worldly feminist movement has actually become anti-woman.

 

  Right.

 

  Where now men, now win, women of the war, which is actually very anti-woman.

 

  And, you know, having men play women’s sports, and this is supposed to be liberating for women. It’s actually anti-woman. Jesus is very much pro-woman, pro-man, pro-wives, pro-husbands, pro-marriage, pro-life. You can’t really have a good social justice movement apart from Jesus.

 

  You can’t have true justice apart from Jesus.

 

  That’s true.

 

  Whenever there’s a great social movement going on, and a lot of, you know, a lot of noise going about, if Jesus isn’t there, I don’t wanna have a part of it.

 

  Verse seven, here in first Peter three, verse seven, it says, “husbands, likewise, dwell with them, with understanding, giving honor to the wife as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life that your prayers may not be hindered.” And I wanna just kind of talk about some of these points that deal with husbands, where I am a husband. First of all, it says be understanding. You know, I kind of joked about this. It doesn’t say to understand them. Sometimes, you know, wives, women don’t need to be understood. They just need to have someone who has an understanding heart.

 

  They need to be heard, they need to be listened to.

 

  Just be, understanding. It doesn’t mean you have to figure out everything going on.

 

  And sometimes, men want to solve problems and really understand the problem and solve it, but it’s saying, it’s talking about, a heart level thing. Be understanding. And that’s actually a really great word for someone. You don’t have to try to understand everything, just be understanding.

 

  Giving honor, this is actually a huge, just a huge revelation God’s shown me about husbands are to give honor to their wife. The Greek word for honor means to set a value to.

 

  It means to set a value to something. And it’s saying to give honor, to give value to. So it’s actually saying, to make your wife more valuable.

 

  So how do you make something more valuable? You know, my dad is great at seeing value in things. You know, he bought this building that our church is in. It’s a very large building, 110,000,

 

  120,000 square foot.

 

  120,000 square foot building. We bought it, it was undervalued. You know, it was foreclosed, the bank was just auctioning it off, we bought it, you know, for $5.7 million, put 2 million in  I know these are large numbers, but I’m gonna get to my point. Two million into renovating it, making it, really what it could be,

 

  Right.

 

  And today, you know, the county has actually valued this building at what, 20 million?

 

  They, no, they valued it at 29 million dollars.

 

  29 million. And we bought it for five.

 

  And I actually asked them to lower the valuation to 24 million. Because if I leased part of the building to a for profit .

 

  For tax purposes. But to build it, it would be 40 million. And, since we bought this building a few years ago, this whole part of town has really exploded. You know, there’s Colorado’s first In-N-Out was placed right by here. Whataburger, the very first Whataburger went in. Just everyone knows this area is really, was, is very valuable.

 

  So you’re to, to give out, so that means to see value where other people, or even your own wife might not see value. To make her feel more valuable, to draw out that value, draw out the God-given gifts, talents, heart and beauty. That’s what it means to give honor. And it says too, “as the weaker vessel”, it’s not saying that she is the weaker vessel. It’s saying to, if something, as to the weaker vessel, you know, my nine-year-old son plays with Legos, and sometimes he’s worked really hard all day on a Lego creation and when he’s worked really hard, sometimes some of these Lego creations take days to create. He’s not just gonna leave that on the floor where his toddler sister can come smash it. He’s gonna, because it, he honors it, values it, as a weaker vessel. He is gonna put it up on a shelf. It’s a trophy item. So with your wife, you don’t just leave her on the ground where people can beat her up, and treat her like dirt, Right.

 

  you’re gonna put her on a high shelf, where this is something that’s prized, I don’t want this thing to get broken, it’s so valuable to me. That’s what it means, in talking about, as to the weaker vessel. And then remember that you are heirs together. That’s huge.

 

  You know, you are on the same team, you’re heirs together. And it goes on, and says that your prayers may not be hindered. Really how you treat people, that God has given you, these God-given relationships, whether it be your children, your wife, your pastors, your coworkers, people that God has placed in your life, if you treat them like dirt, it’s gonna hinder your prayer life. It’s gonna hinder, and it’s not that God doesn’t wanna give things to you, it’s that you are, you’re just being a numbskull. I don’t want my prayers to be hindered. So I’m gonna, there are, there’s a strong correlation between your relationship with God and the relationships that he’s given you. And God wants us to inherit a blessing. So we need to keep operating with that spirit of meekness, that spirit of gentleness. And, it’s really required for leaders in the body of Christ. If you want to be a leader, and God to give you more influence, meekness is huge. You know, Galatians six verse one says, “brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself, lest you also be tempted.” Sometimes when people see that someone else is in the wrong, someone else had a falling away, someone else did something dumb.

 

  Fail.

 

  They wanna just really.

 

  Listen, Aaron, I’ve preached grace, I’m around grace people, I believe in grace. I believe that I show grace, and I’ve shown grace in a really great way to people. Maybe sometimes too much grace, if there’s such a thing. But at the same point in time, I see people who call themselves grace people, I see people who think that they understand this, and when a brother or sister falls, when a brother or sister sometimes does something, they have no personal knowledge about it, whatever, people are so quick, to cast judgment. And I’m telling you, it is terrible. And that’s what Romans 15 one and two is talking about. That’s what Galatians six verse one, it’s talking about. You restore people in the spirit of meekness and you consider yourself, lest you be tempted. And I’m telling you, if it wasn’t for the grace of God, we wouldn’t be where we’re at, doing what we’re doing, we wouldn’t be able to minister to people like we do. So it’s not only about us receiving grace, it’s about us sharing grace. And if you really have a revelation of grace, you need to become more gracious towards other people, and minister the grace of Jesus. And I believe that’s part of that humility, that’s part of that meekness. Understand that I am who I am, because of how God has made me.
