Hebrews Transcript

Praise the Lord, friends, and welcome to the broadcast. I’m so glad that you’ve tuned in today. We are concluding the book of Hebrews in Hebrews chapter 13 and we’re talking about Jesus. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. And if you wanna know the will of God, you just gotta look at Jesus because he shows it to us plainly. Stay tuned and receive the good word of God today, blessings. Friends, it’s great to have you with us today and we’re sharing our final message today on Hebrews. We’re in Hebrews chapter 13. We’ve been sharing here from Hebrews for the last two weeks. And we’re really talking about the grace of God and our response to it. We talked about this earlier. In Hebrews, it says 13 times, one for every chapter, let us. And really, when you understand the grace of God, when you understand what Jesus has already done for you, the positive response to that is faith. And in Hebrews 5, Hebrews actually talks about Jesus is the great high priest of this new covenant and he’s a priest of grace, and it talks about the grace of God. But in Hebrews chapter 6, it says, let us go on into maturity and let us live by faith. So when you understand grace, what you do is you live by faith. And so this book is really about the new covenant which is about grace and faith. And today in Hebrews chapter 13, the writer of Hebrews actually talks a lot just about how we should live as those who have faith in God’s grace. So Aaron, jump into the word.

It says here, Hebrews 13, verse 1, let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing, some have unwittingly entertained angels. Remember the prisoners as if chained with them, those who are mistreated since you yourselves are in the body also. Marriage is honorable among all in the bed undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Let your conduct be without covetousness, be content with such things as you have, for he himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, I will not fear. What can man do to me?

Amen, praise God. So you know what, as believers, we not only need to receive the grace of God, we need to live like it. And so he says, number one, you need to let the love of God rule you. You know love is the law that we live by. You know there are really only two New Testament commandments if you read 1 John chapter 3, verse 23 and 4 at the very end of the chapter. It says that this is his commandment that we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave his commandment. Romans 13:10 says that love is the fulfilling of the law. And so we shouldn’t make a decision without considering the love of God. We need to think about how God loves people and how this decision not only affects us, but how it affects other people. And so we need to keep loving people and part of love is what we do to different ones around us. And he said some people have entertained angels unaware. And so you know I’m not a bleeding heart, but I do believe people should have the Bible talks about clothing and shelter, and basic needs met and I’ve actually done a lot and helped a lot of people in different ways. But at that same point in time, sometimes we might have angels that we’re taking care of and not even realize it.

You know sometimes some of those people think they’re super spiritual, super prophetic, super in tune with God, yet they’re a very just mean person, they’re a jerk to people, they’re disrespectful, they’re prideful. You really aren’t as big a deal as you think you are if you act like that.

Amen. You should always be respectful, be kind, treat everyone like… Man, I remember when I was younger when I went to college when I was 18, I went to church. I didn’t really have a lot to offer that church, I didn’t have a lot of money to give, but there were people there that just really treated me with just incredible kindness. Like you said, they treated you like you were Jesus.

Amen. And that’s a great testimony to have. And we need to have that test  Your life preaches to people.

Yeah, our life is a testimony.

Your generosity, your hospitality, how you treat people, that preaches the gospel. That often preaches it more than words.

And you know, Aaron, as those who have received grace, we need to be gracious. And I know we had a couple of years ago a group in the church and they said, “Oh, we had a dream about this certain person “and he’s molesting people and all this…” And Aaron, we don’t even know that there was even opportunity, there was absolutely no evidence. And this person supposedly had a dream and then they told another person, they supposedly had the same dream-

Well, gossip is demonic. Some of those people think they hear from God and they go gossiping about it, about some dream or some discerning experience they had  And if you just go gossiping around about it, it’s actually demonic. Gossip is demonic, like sowing discord among the brethren and God hates that. So if you can’t, you need to be able to get along with people and to function and not just be a crazy lunatic all the time.

Yeah, and some of these people, Dr. Sumrall actually talked about this and he said some people think, this is Dr. Lester Sumrall, think they have the discerning of devils and it’s not the discerning of devils. It’s the discerning of spirits. And not only if you study this operation of this gift out, it not only discerns evil, it discerns good. Jesus said about Nathaniel in John chapter 1, behold an Israelite in whom is no guile or no deceit. Jesus discerned his spirit.

And if you look at 1 Corinthians 12, followed by you know where it talks about the charismatic gifts, followed by 1 Corinthians 13 about love, followed by 1 Corinthians 14 which he ends saying, if you think you’re prophetic, if you think you’re spiritual, let everything be done decently and in order.

Let me share this. 1 Corinthians 12, it’s the power of God, 1 Corinthians 13 is the love of God, 1 Corinthians chapter 14 is talking about order. Now, the Bible says this in 2 Timothy 1, verse 7, it says God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. 1 Corinthians 12, 13 and 14, see that? Fits right together. Now, this group, this person they accused, there’s nothing. I knew that young man, he’s a Charis Bible College student. He’d been in my church for years. His parents had left the church, but he still serves here at the church. And you know what? He’s tremendously in love with Jesus. This was just a complete lie of the devil. You had somebody the other day came and accused a person who we know here at the church who’s been volunteering for a long time. They have very, very good fruit. They came from another church where they had very, very good fruit, him and his wife. This is just lies, it’s just garbage.

You don’t judge people by people’s dreams or by their feelings. You judge people by their fruit. And you need to be respectful. You need to be kind and respectful. And if you’re talking bad about your pastor and just going against him, you’re out of order. You’re not decent, you’re out of order, you’re not even respectful. You are not walking in love.

Sunday, in between services, and this is a great woman and she said, “I just wanna know what’s going on here “with the board and different things…” And I said, here, see who the legal board is and I named them all off, here see the advisory board is, here’s the original members, they’re still here in the church. Here’s these other members, all three of the original members of the board, there were two and then another we added, families besides us are there and then here’s the other people that God, they’ve really become leaders in the church. They’re still there. We had a few years ago, somebody, two, three years ago, somebody stepped down. And you know what? They took another person from the board. They tried to split the church, they tried to take another one. That person said, “God hasn’t called me to leave. “God’s called me to stay here and this is my church.” And you know what, that person just has tremendous honor. But you know, I said, listen, tell these people. She said, “Well, this is really gossip and it’s not true.” I said, that’s right, tell them just to come talk to me. I have nothing to hide. I’ll tell them the truth, I’m not gonna lie. All liars will have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone-

People came to me bringing gossip to me and they said, “10 people are talking about this.” And I said, you know that’s gossip and that’s demonic.

About me not being at another church’s meetings.

  Yeah, yeah.

It’s ridiculous. There’s 300 churches in this town. I don’t announce Andrew Womack is my mentor. I don’t announce every meeting that Andrew Womack has. I don’t announce every meeting that I’m going to speak-

So let brotherly love continue. That’s a great statement.

People are ridiculous. And your conduct matters. How you act, how you treat people, how you treat your brothers and sisters, but how you treat people in the world, it all matters. You should always be respectful.

And he talks about remembering those that are in bonds. There’s people that were enslaved for preaching the gospel. There still are. He says as bound with them who suffer adversity and being yourselves in the same body. Don’t forget about them. Then he talks about your marriage. You know what, if you can’t get it right at home, it’s gonna be hard to get it right at church. You know the people that I’ve had problems with generally are having a lot of problems in their home. Mark Akin said this years ago. He said, “I’ve never had a problem with a man on my board “that wasn’t having problems with his wife.” And I have found that people when they’re having major marriage problems, they’re tough to deal with. And I’ve found that almost to be the gospel. I mean, it’s just…

It’s really true. Marriage is honorable and all and the bed undefiled, but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. You know live right, live pure, do what the Bible says. Stay away from adultery and fornication. Let your behavior, your conversation, your lifestyle be without covetousness, be content with what you have, for he said I will never leave you or forsake you. I believe God wants to bless you. He wants to multiply you. He’s multiplied me over and over again. I believe those promises but it’s not… You know, godliness with contentment the Bible says is great gain.

Yeah, so covetousness and contentment. So when you covet something, you can want something that’s nice. You can want… You can be inspired by someone, maybe you’re single and someone close to you got married and you’re inspired to want to be married someday yourself. Maybe someone, a close friend who got a great job and you desire that. But it’s covetousness when there’s content, when you’re not content, where you’re not thankful for what you have. So you say, hey, maybe I’m not married yet, but God, I’m gonna be thankful for what you’re doing in my life. I know you’re gonna take care of me. I’m gonna be thankful for that person who got something good and I’m gonna be thankful for what you’re doing in my life.

You know what, Aaron, there is great strength when you’re content. You know Mom and I went to one of these deals just ’cause we got a free hotel room. And it was one of these timeshare sales deals, but years ago, we were going over to visit her grandma. We didn’t have a lot of extra money at the time and we stopped back by and stayed at this real nice place in Vail. And this lady, we had to listen to this sales speech after we stayed at this nice place. And she said, “What would it take to make you happy?” And I just said, I am happy. And you know, there’s just great strength in that. You know your mom looked at something the other day, this house and she said we might get it. And you know I said, yeah, if God gives it to us, it’s okay. But she’s like, “You know what? “The house we have is really, really nice.” And if God gives us that, great. If he doesn’t, that’s great. We’re in a tremendous position of strength because we’re not covetous, we’re content with what God’s given us. And when you get that contented attitude, God will take care of you and bless you more.

And you can still believe for big things, too.

Yeah, listen, I was thinking about-

And you can still be thankful for what he’s doing right now in your life.

Yeah, how could we do this, how could the Lord, but you know whatever God does, but I’m not gonna make a stupid decision. I’m gonna use wisdom. And so he said I’ll never leave you or forsake you so that you may boldly say the Lord is my helper. Therefore, I will not fear what man will do to me. Remember those who have the rule over you. You know we need to have spiritual authority. I went to Andrew Womack probably 20 years ago. And I said, Andrew, if you ever see anything in my life you wanna speak to me about, you speak, my door is open, my ears are open, I’m ready to learn. He said, “Lawson, I already know that.” I said, how do you know that? I’ve never told you that. He said, “It’s the attitude in which you conduct yourself.” Some people have no authority over them. They don’t know how to respond to authority. They’re rebellious. I’ve seen some people that are really rebellious, it’s terrible. And he says, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow and consider the end of their behavior. Man, if you’re rebellious, your end will not be good. And so he said, Jesus, you need to repent if you’re being in rebellion. Just get out of it. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And so you know we’re gonna take a very short break. We’re gonna be right back. And we’re gonna continue to share here from Hebrews chapter 13. You don’t wanna miss the end of this. There’s some great things about the word of God working in you, but stay tuned. We’ll be right back, it’ll great, blessings. Hi, friends, I’m so glad that you’re watching today. I have my son, Aaron, with me and we’re teaching on the book of Hebrews. This is one of my favorite books of the Bible and we have some great teaching available on our website CharisChristianCenter.com. It’s free of charge, downloadable, Hebrews The Better Covenant, Hebrews Jesus Makes Everything Better and my book also, Hebrews The Better Covenant. The word of God will work for you. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, it doesn’t matter where you came from. Glory to God, it matters what you believe. And you need to begin to believe what God said about you because anywhere in the world that people will believe the Bible, they can prosper. And he said, you have a revelation of it, so I want you to teach it, hallelujah. Friends, I’m so glad that you’re still with us. We’re right here in Hebrews chapter 13. And Aaron, begin reading in verse 9 and just share on verse 9.

All right, I wanna read verse 8, too, I don’t think we read that one yet.

  Okay.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. And that really ties into verse 9. It says do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines, for it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. So really, if there is a doctrine that goes against that Jesus Christ isn’t the same, that his power isn’t there, that his will isn’t the same, it is always his will to heal, it is always within his power to heal, it’s always his will to save people, to deliver people. If there’s any kind of doctrine that doesn’t teach that, it’s strange and you need to stay away from it.

There’s a lot of strange doctrine out there.

There’s a lot of strange doctrine out there in the church today, so you need to stay away from strange doctrine.

Amen, and so he says it’s good that your heart be established with grace. We need to get our heart established in Jesus, in the grace of God. Then he goes on and says this in verse 10, we have an altar where of they have no right to eat which serve in the tabernacle. You know this altar, what he’s talking about is Jesus. The altar in the Old Testament represented man’s approach to God. We approach God through Jesus. Jesus is our altar. We come to God on the basis of Jesus and the finished work of the cross. He said for the bodies of those beasts in the old covenant whose blood is brought in the sanctuary by the high priest for sin are burned on the outside of the camp wherefore Jesus also they might sanctify the people with his own blood suffered outside the gate. You know, Golgotha, when you look at it. And you can study Gordon’s Calvary. And I believe that’s where Jesus was crucified and there’s a lot of biblical reasons you can study about him. But it’s outside of the walled city of Jerusalem. I believe that’s where Jesus was crucified. And he was buried in a tomb not far away, just 150 yards from the hill of the skull. And it was in the place of a garden, right outside, 20, 30 yards outside of where the tomb that was cut and a stone, it had a stone that rolled. They’ve only found three tombs in all the Jerusalem area like that, had this stone that rolled. There was a cistern, it’s one of the largest cisterns in the whole Jerusalem area, yet it’s outside the city. It was to water the garden. There’s a wine press right there. Very close to this cistern where they watered the garden. All these things talk to us about the gospel’s true and Jesus suffered outside the gate. And it says, let us go forth therefore to him without the camp bearing his reproach. We go to Jesus, we go to the cross. He says, wherefore we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come. Man, this world is not my home. I am a citizen of heaven on loan to the earth from God. And if you live with that mentality, it will change the way that you live your life. He says, by him, therefore, again, going back to verse 10, let us offer the sacrifice, I’m in verse 15. The sacrifice of praise to God continually. We can come into the presence of God 365, 24/7 because Jesus blood made the way. He says that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. We can praise God because of what Jesus did. We can pray because of what Jesus did. We can thank God because of what Jesus did. We have our prayers answered because of what Jesus did. We’re saved, sanctified because of what Jesus did. He said but to do good and communicate, keep doing good, keep giving, forget not for with such sacrifices, God is well pleased. Again he says in verse 17, obey those who have the rule. He’s talking about submitting and listening, respecting godly authority. He says and submit yourself to them, for they watch for your souls. We need people that care about our souls, that care about us enough that when we get off that they’ll speak the truth to us, that you must give an account that they may do it with joy and not with grief, for that is unprofitable for you. You know these nuts that come and act crazy and say stupid stuff and make crazy accusations, and you told some the other day, “That’s gossip and that’s demonic.” And they said, “We’ll pray about it.” You said, “No, that’s gossip and that’s demonic.” You know what, they need to read these Scriptures and do what they say. Quit gossiping about things you don’t know the truth about. You don’t know. You know people are just crazy. And so he says, pray for us. Man, right after that, we had Greg Moore come and he ministered to the church. And he said, “Listen, you need to stop complaining.” People are just complaining about everything, it’s pathetic. And so he said, pray for us that we have a good conscience. He says, submit yourself to those who watch for you souls that they must give account that they do it with joy and not with grief, for that is unprofitable. Man, when these people just complain, it’s greedy. He goes on and says, pray for us that we trust that we have a good conscience in all things. You know, if you’re worried about your leaders, pray for them. He says, we trust they have a good conscience and they live honestly. Honestly, he says, but I beseech you rather that you do this that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now, the God of beasts that brought again from the dead, Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you perfect. God makes you perfect in the spirit. He talks about this three times. Makes you perfect in every good work. Now, this is not talking about the spirit. This is talking about in your body and every good work, but it’s because of what he did through the blood in your spirit. To do his will working in you. See, works in you. God works in me, both the will and to do his good pleasure. That’s Philippians chapter 2, verse 13. God works in my spirit both to will in my soul and to do in my body. This is talking about the blood of Jesus affects you spirit, soul and body, amen. In every good work to do is working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus, to whom be glory forever. Amen, we need to live for the glory of God. Amen, Aaron, share some things here.

Well, I’ll just read the few more verses here. Verse 22, it says, and I appeal to you, brethren. Bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written to you in few words. Know that our brother Timothy has been set free with whom I shall see you if he comes shortly. Greet all those who rule over you and all the saints, those from Italy greet you. Grace be with you all, amen.

Amen, so praise God. You know the book of Hebrews is all about Jesus. We have a better covenant established on better promises and Jesus made it better. In Hebrews chapter 1, he says Jesus is better than angels and God is speaking to us through Jesus. In Hebrews chapter 2, he says don’t move away from Jesus. Jesus is the one who gives us authority. Jesus is the one who pours out the Holy Spirit. Don’t move away from Jesus. In chapter 3, he says Jesus is better than Moses. Don’t harden your heart to Jesus. And don’t harden your heart to the voice of the Holy Spirit, praise God. In Hebrews chapter 4, he says this, he says, come to rest in Jesus. Jesus is the one who finished the work. Jesus is the one who completed the deal, praise God. There remains a rest to the people of God, amen. That’s in Jesus. He says this what the children of Israel didn’t receive ultimately what they were talking about, their rest, because David came several hundred years later and spoke of another day. David was speaking of Jesus, praise God. In Hebrews chapter 5, he says Jesus is the great high priest of this new covenant. He is our priest king of righteousness, amen. And he says, really, we need to get established in the grace of God. That’s what he’s talking about. In the end of Hebrews chapter 5, our hearts can know Jesus. In Hebrews chapter 6, he said, when you understand that Jesus is the great high priest, you understand the grace of God, the natural result is that you’re gonna live by faith. So go on into maturity and live by faith and let the faith of God be a living testimony of God’s grace in your life. We’re not of those who draw back. And that’s said later in Hebrews chapter 10 to perdition. But he says there in Hebrews chapter 6, be followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. When you understand the grace of God, keep believing Jesus. God’s spoken some things to us through Jesus. Hebrews chapter 7 says we have this great high priest, Jesus. Since we got a better covenant, we’ve got a better priest, his name is Jesus. And praise God, he’s never gonna die. And Jesus is the one who has secured the promise for you. Jesus is the surety, he’s the guaranty of the promises of the new covenant. Hebrews chapter 8 says we have a better covenant established on better promises. Again, Jesus made it better. In the old covenant, God said, if you’ll do this, then I’ll do this. In the New Testament new covenant he said, I’ll be merciful to your sin and your unrighteousness. I will remember them no more. Praise God, we get the promises not because of what we do, but because of what he did. In Hebrews chapter 9, he says we have a better sanctuary, the body of Christ. We have a better sacrifice, the blood of Jesus Christ, praise God. And the blood of Jesus Christ has secured the promises for us, amen. The blood of Jesus, in Hebrews chapter 10, he says we have a better life. Praise God, thank God because of Jesus. And so having boldness, come into the presence of God because of Jesus. Hebrews chapter 11, he says keep living by faith. Praise God, keep living by faith. Here’s what faith looks like. These people of faith spoke the word of God, these people of faith acted on the word of God. You could see faith in the lives of Abel and Noah and Abraham and David and Moses and Joshua and Rahab. All these people had faith. Hebrews chapter 12, he says this. He says, now, Jesus has went before us and he’s finished the deal. So just keep listening to Jesus. God speaks to us through Jesus. Finally in Hebrews chapter 12, he says Jesus is our altar. Keep coming to God through Jesus. He represents our approach to God, amen. And let the grace of God have its way.

I love hearing in Hebrews 13 that it says Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And this new covenant, this better covenant with better promises, it’s an eternal covenant. And these promises, they’re always available. There remains promises for us. There remains a promise of rest for us as believers. So if we can just rest in the finished work of Jesus today.
