Imparting Success To The Next Generation – Part 2 Lawson and Barbara Perdue (Updated)

  Friends, it’s great to have you with us today. I have my wife Barbara. We’re beginning a brand new series, and we’re gonna be talking about imparting success to the next generation. Barbara has written a book on this. It’s a fantastic book, and you know what? It’s working in our lives. So stay tuned. Tell your friends about the broadcast. I believe you’re gonna be encouraged today by the Word of God that works for you. Friends, it’s so good to have you with us today. I’m so happy to have my wife, Barbara. We’re actually gonna be sharing all of this week on her teaching on imparting success to the next generation. And she actually taught this for at Charis Bible College for 10 years, over 10 years. And then she wrote a book on it. It’s a fantastic book. It’s working in our lives, it’s working in our children’s lives. And the good news is that God is no respecter of persons. He’s only a respecter of faith. So if you will take these scriptural principles that have worked for us in our life and our family, they’ll work for you and your family because God has no respect for a persons, only a respect for faith. So be encouraged today.

 

  I like that. Be encouraged. This was really written to help families out, to help parents out. And you know, I know a lot of times grandparents even help with families. And so this is just a very practical teaching that anybody can read, anybody, whether they’re married or single, you know, we’re all around people, we’re all around kids. So this is really written for married people, single people. It’s a very healthy teaching to help everybody get encouraged and empowered, really to see how to use the Word of God.

 

  Amen.

 

  To get from A to B.

 

  And you know, this is not only good for parents, this is good for grandparents and people who are gonna be parents, you know, if you get a plan ahead from the Word of God, and then, you know, our older generation needs to be imparting things to the next generation and the next generation. And that is biblical. And when you do it, I believe you can reap the benefits of what God promises.

 

  Amen. So we’re gonna have a lot of fun just jumping into this first chapter, and it’s just called “Raising the Next Generation.” And I have this in Proverbs 24:3, and it says, “Through wisdom, a house is built and by understanding, it is established.” Did you know the Bible says if we lack wisdom, we can ask God for it and he’ll give it to us liberally? And this is in any area of our life, even building a home, having a strong marriage, having a strong family, and praying over our children. We can pray for wisdom, how to have a strong marriage, wisdom, how to raise each of our children. We raised three sons, so that was three unique different people. And we could ask God for each one how to raise them. And he will download amazing information for us.

 

  Praise God. You know, I know Barbara, you have tremendous wisdom even in counseling different people with their children and different things. I know people have brought in children from two years old, you know, to 16, 17 years old and ask, and you’ve just spoken into their lives and it’s just changed them.

 

  Amen.

 

  And you know, we have some people even that work at our church and that help us in these areas. And they have been imparting wisdom. One of our families had been here for years. They’re, they were having major problems with their grandson. And so they asked me what to do and I said, bring them to this family and get counseling. And they did. And it totally changed. This young man just changed just night to day. And he’s here nearly every service now. He’s so happy.

 

  Hm mm?

 

  And you know, that part of the family had not been in our church, but since they’ve seen this transformation, actually several families have joined because they’ve seen such a transformation in this child. But, you know, transformation should be the result of the Word of God working in our life. And so we get wisdom from the Holy Spirit, but we also get wisdom from the Word of God.

 

  We do, and I like what the Bible says about the older men teaching the younger men, imparting wisdom to them, the older women teaching the younger women how to be, you know, good to their husbands, good housekeepers or homemakers, in other words, strong in your home, but how to impart that wisdom for that next generation.

 

  Yes!

 

  And so we really built our home on the Word of God. And that’s how we’re gonna start today in Psalm 1:27.

 

  Yeah. Okay, so I’ll jump over there to Psalm 1:27. While you’re talking about wisdom, I remember my grandfather-

 

  Hm mm?

 

  and I had the privilege of working for my grandfather. My parents moved back to the farm when I was eight years old. And then, you know, when I was 13 years old, I began to work for my grandfather and worked for my grandfather for about 10 or 11 years till you and I went to Bible school. And we’d been married at that point about three to four years. And you know, my grandfather was a man that was just full of the grace of God and he loved the Lord Jesus. But I remember many times sitting down with my grandparents and my grandfather almost every day when we prayed over the meal, he would ask God for wisdom, and thank God for wisdom. And you know what? God gives wisdom out of his mouth comes wisdom and understanding. And if you’ll ask for wisdom, God is again, no respect of persons. God will give you wisdom and he’ll give it to you in all kinds of areas. You know, recently I was just asking God, I was just like, you know, a couple of my mentors that I had for a long time in the financial area, business people, totally different men, but really had an influence on my life. They went home to be with the Lord. And I’m like, Lord, I need some more people in these certain areas. And God has been faithful to give me those people and open up doors that I’ve asked him to. And many times we don’t, we just don’t ask. And if you’ll ask the Lord for wisdom, he’ll give it to you.

 

  Another thing I wanna bring out too, while we share on this, is the Word of God has the answers. And so that’s why I’m so excited. Again, this is a very simple teaching and I’m excited that we’re gonna share it with you and you’re gonna catch it and run with it. And we are gonna start in Psalm 127:1-5. And I like how it says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” We want our homes to be built on godly principles. “And unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late to eat the bread of sorrows, for so he gives his beloved sleep.” And I love this. In verse three, it says, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward.” And then verse four, this is really powerful, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior. So are the children of one’s youth. Happy is a man who has his quiver full of them. They should not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.”

 

  Amen. Praise God. So our children are a heritage of the Lord. You know, our children, I always looked at our children like these are God’s children.

 

  Amen.

 

  And God has given them to me and to Barbara-

 

  Entrusted us.

 

  and he has given us the responsibility of raising them and finding their gifts and talents and helping them find their gifts and talents and developing those gifts and talents that are on the inside of them. And our children actually are all very different, but they all love Jesus. They’re all involved in the local church. And you know what? They’re all blessed. They’re blessed in their work, they’re blessed in their church, they’re blessed with their families. And praise God, it’s good.

 

  Hm mm, it is good. So I like that how it says, “Children are a heritage. The fruit of the womb is a reward.” You know, when we were having our children, I felt like I was really, there’s different trends and cultures, and I know different countries have experienced this where people like put you down for having children, like “You’re having another one?” And you know, I think it’s really sad that that’s just not even biblical to think that way that you know, your children are, you know, worrisome or you know, a curse to you. They are a blessing. And it’s a good thing to want children to want family. It’s a godly desire and it is a positive thing. But it’s interesting how cultures, and I know other countries have experienced this, where they look down on you if you wanna have children, or if you wanna be a mom and, and stay in the home and raise them and take care of them. I know when I was expecting our third one, somebody you know, said to me, “What are you a Mennonite or a Quaker or something?” And, and you know-

 

  That is ungodly.

 

  It’s just crazy.

 

  You know, a lot of people just don’t know what the scripture says. And I believe that one way we influence the world is through our families and through having good, godly, strong families that are living by the principles of the Word of God. And you know, in verse four, it goes on and says this, “As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of the youth,” you know? So an arrow, you know, is meant to hit a target. And you have some very good teaching along this line.

 

  We’ll have some more later on if we get to it. But in Proverbs it tells us, “Train up a child in the way they should go. And when they’re old, they won’t depart from it.” When you study that out, it’s telling us, in keeping in mind with your child’s gift or bent-

 

  Amen.

 

  Their anointings and callings on their life, then when they’re old, they won’t be lost. In other words, they’ll have some, they’ll be excited to live with purpose and passion. Children need to know that there is a God, he loves them. They are created in his image with God-given purposes and anointings on their life. And then I like what you just brought out, like arrows in the hand of a warrior. Too many times people treat their children like a bag of confetti. They throw ’em up in the air. Well, wherever they land, that must have been God. But you know, again, you brought out, an arrow was designed to hit the target. We wanna help our children hit their God-given target.

 

  And it says, “So are the children of your youth.” So it’s important that we have strength, you know, and that we use our strength to impart things to our children. And that’s really what we’re talking about. He goes on and says this in verse five, Happy is the man or the person who has his quiver full of them. I’ve been told that a quiver in Bible times was five. He says, they will not be ashamed, but they will speak with the enemies in the gate. In other words, your children will be leaders. The gates are where they carried on business and major deals in the city and government. And so he said, you know, our children are gonna be put in a position of honor and a position of authority, and our children are gonna be making the decisions and we need to train them up. So when they get to that point, they can make good decisions. This is something some Christians live with a lot of fear and they just try to protect their kids from everything. And I’ve talked to some of my friends that are in the ministry and different things and like, you know what? It’s better for your child to deal with temptation and these different things while they’re at home. And don’t just live in fear. Then you can talk with them about you know, what they’re dealing with and help them go through it. And I’ve seen some people that tried to protect their children from everything and then it’s just like when they got up 20 years old or something, they were just thrown out to the wolves. And you know that temptation’s still gonna be there. So I believe we’re gonna give you some practical keys that you can impart to your children this week and it will really help your children move into what God has for ’em.   There’s so much power in the spoken blessing. Things happen in the spiritual realm, when you speak the blessing. You might not see anything happening in the physical realm, but you need to speak the blessing because things are happening in the spirit realm. There is a blessing in the congregation.

 

  Friends, I’m glad that you stayed with us. We’ve been talking about imparting success to the next generation. And Barbara has a great book on this. It works, it’s working in our life, it’s working in our children, and it’s been very, very positive. She also taught this for over 10 years at Charis Bible College here in Colorado. And Andrew Wommack wrote a fantastic forward to your book. And it just great principles, you know, the word will work for anybody that will believe it. So believe it.

 

  Amen.

 

  So you can receive the blessing of it.

 

  So, you know, we talked about, we started off with the importance of building our home on the Lord, like we need to have Godly principles. And I like this next part because my mother was awesome. You know, I wanna talk about instilling faith. And this is found in 2 Timothy 1:5, and it says, “When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and in your mother Eunice, I am persuaded as in you also,” you know, years ago on Mother’s Day, I taught something caught, you know, faith taught and caught. You know, we wanna pass on that love for the Lord. And my mom was just great at this nurturing us, and caring for us. But also she was the one who really got me excited about God and believing him for, you know, everything that the Bible talks about. She would play the organ, play the piano for church, and then at home she was always worshiping God and so she loved God and that love and that passion was contagious.

 

  Amen.

 

  And so I love how this is really brought out that we can instill faith in our children.

 

  Amen.

 

  It talks about these two women, how in his life, these two women, his mother and grandmother, were really instrumental in communicating that faith and honey, there’s something I wanna bring out. I think this is so powerful. When we were raising our children, you know, we got married young and we had children and we, you know, we changed careers. We left the farm and ranch to go in ministry. And then we moved, you know, everything they say, that’s the three biggest life changing events, we did all at the same time, you know, got married, had changed careers, moved, had a family. And one thing we did, what was really important to us, whenever we gathered around the table, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner, or even a snack, if I made homemade cookies whenever we gathered with our children, we never talked about lack. We never talked about being frustrated or who was mean or stuff like that. We always talked about God and how big he was and how abundantly he wanted to bless all of us and that our children could believe for him, for anything. And that all things are possible through God, through Christ Jesus who strengthens us.

 

  And you know, I know our sons have talked about this and they’ve talked about how we never told them, really you can’t do something. If we saw that our children had any type of gifting in any area, and it was positive, you know, even maybe if we didn’t see gifting, but if we saw they had the physical quality, so on and so forth, to accomplish something, we would encourage them to develop their talents. And I really encouraged our boys not only to spend time in the Word of God, which I got them when they were children, to read one chapter of their Bible, you know, like every day of the week. And if you do that, you read through the New Testament, specifically the New Testament in a year, and you know, like five days a week if you do that. And so I got them to do that. But a lot of Christians are good about telling their kids spiritual things, but we also need to teach them natural things. And this is where I feel like many times in the church that we’ve missed it, because we understand the spiritual side of our children, but we don’t understand the physical side of our children and the emotional side. So we had our children working in music, working, you know, in in their education, right? And being involved in sports and developing all these different areas until they kind of figured out what their direction was gonna be. And I know our oldest son, Aaron, he got so involved in music, he got in the youth symphony here in Colorado when he was a freshman when we just moved here to Colorado Springs. And so he no longer after his freshman year could be involved in sports because he was so involved in music. But the other two of our sons, they played football and ran track through clear through high school. And then their, our youngest son Peter, played football at Princeton University. But we had ’em working on the, the spiritual side, right? Being in church, being in the word, you know, doing those different things. We had ’em working with music, we had ’em working with sports and we had ’em working with academics and they all were disciplined in those areas and it helped ’em move into the things God had for them.

 

  I like that. I like that. That’s important like you said, to develop all those areas. But getting back to instilling faith, I actually was just thinking of an example. And again, we never talked about lack. And so as our children became of age to drive, I remember we would tell each one of them, you can have whatever kind of car you can afford to purchase that you can afford to buy. And then we never said, “Oh, because you just, you know, make minimum wage,” which might have been what, five or $6 an hour? Then we never said, “Yo, and by the way, you don’t have enough money to buy anything other than the junker.” We never said that. We just said you can buy whatever kind of car you can afford to purchase. Our youngest son really liked cars. You know, I don’t know cars. I know you and our grandchildren, our sons will pass something and they know every car make, and that just doesn’t even register with me. But our youngest son really did like nice things and he was, as a teenager, was working at a used car lot and someone brought in, one of their parents had went on to be with Jesus. Another one was in a nursing home. So they brought their Mercedes to sell at this used car lot. And I think it only had like 35,000 miles on it. I mean it was an, an older model, but it had been garaged its entire life, you know, leather interior, sunroof. And I believe our son purchased that car for what, $2,700, something?

 

  Like he bought it, it was a miracle. God really blessed him

 

  Because we taught them, use your faith.

 

  Right?

 

  To get what you want or what you need. And then we didn’t put any barriers on it. Oh, by the way, you’re just a teenager and you don’t make enough money to get anything nice. Like you use your faith, you work, you put your hands. Know that as you put your hands to something, God is going to bless it.

 

  Right?

 

  And bless and meet you where your faith is.

 

  Well you know, this was an older Mercedes. It was over 15 years old. It was one owner, it had always been garaged, it only had 59,000 miles and he bought it. He actually made, gave the dealer there $500 profit. So he, but the dealer got a really good deal on him when he bought it. But our son within the first week had two offers and one of them, he would’ve made over $5,000, the first week, cash. But it’s just when you believe God, God opens up doors and God will do things for you because you have favor. And we taught our children this, that they had favor and they believed it and they still believe it and it’s still working in their lives.

 

  And then what’s neat, it really sends a testimony, it’s really a witness to everyone around you. Again, our son, he was a teenager in high school and even all of his friends and everyone at the school were so stunned by his purchase and how they could even see the blessing of God on his life. So it really was a testimony-

 

  Amen!

 

  to how God does treat his children. Really good.

 

  Amen, amen. I love what my Mark Hankins says, and he said, you know this, he said, “God wants to bless you so much that he makes you an advertisement.”

 

  Yeah.

 

  “Of how he treats his kids.”

 

  Amen.

 

  And we’ve seen that work in our life.

 

  Hm mm.

 

  Are you here in 1 Timothy 1?

 

  I was, we can move on, unless you wanna do one more, we can go to Deuteronomy 30. There’s a lot of exciting things happening there.

 

  Okay, here in Deuteronomy 30, there’s a couple of things before we get into, it’s talking about making a choice. But prior to this, in verse 11, Deuteronomy 30:11, He says, “This commandment, which I command you this day, is not hidden from you, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven that you should say, who shall go up to heaven and bring it down to us that we may hear it and do it. Neither is it beyond the sea that you should say who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us that we may hear and do it. But the word is near you, even in your mouth and in your heart that you may do it.” A lot of people say, “Well, you know I could do that, but I’m not connected.” It’s across the sea, it’s up in heaven, so on and so forth. But God says the word is near you, it’s in your heart and in your mouth. Of course we know Paul quotes this again in Romans, talking about salvation, but I actually heard this, every person is within four relationships of anybody they need to be connected with to accomplish anything that God has called them to do. And you know, rather than thinking, “Well it’s so far away I can’t do it, it’s so…” You know, this or that and making excuses. If you start believing this, then God will open doors. Then he begins to talk about the power of decision. And Barbara, if you wanna read the two verses you have, verse 15 and verse 19, we’ll talk about that really quickly.

 

  So in verse 15, this is Deuteronomy 30:15. It says, “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. I call heaven and earth as witnesses that I have set before you, life and death, blessing and cursing.” Therefore, and I like how it gives the answer, “Choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”

 

  Amen. So faith really begins with making a decision. I love something that Jesse Duplantis said about faith years ago. It got on the inside of me and it has worked on me for at least 10 or years or more. But he said, “Most of the time, in the realm of faith, I made a decision and God backed it.”

 

  Amen.

 

  You know, I believe number one, we make a decision, number two, we meditate the Word. Number three, we begin to speak the Word. Number four, we begin to act on the Word. And then God brings the word to pass in our life. But it begins right here with what He’s saying in Deuteronomy, also talks about this in the New Testament with making a choice. And when you make a choice to believe God in the realm of faith, then God can bring you places maybe that you thought were never possible before.

 

  Hm mm. Amen.

 

  Barbara, we just have a few seconds left to the program, but before we go off, do you wanna say something to the people?

 

  Well, I’m just gonna pray for all of you right now. Those watching, just, “Dear heavenly Father, we just pray in the name of Jesus. Lord, I thank You for those parents and grandparents, aunt and uncles and those who take care of children, that they are blessed, they’re blessed with wisdom, and they have the wisdom to know what to do. And I just pray for that spirit of weariness and I thank you for giving them hope and a new strength. In Jesus’ name.
