Imparting Success To The Next Generation Transcript
Praise God, friends, it’s so good to have you on the broadcast today. I have my wife, Barbara, with us, we’re gonna be sharing on imparting success to the next generation. And today we’re gonna be specifically talking about the value of the word of God and what happens when we put the word of God first place in our life. You don’t wanna miss this broadcast, so stay tuned. I believe you’re gonna be blessed. Thanks so much. Friends, it is so good to have you with us. And I have Barbara here and we’re actually sharing from her book, “Imparting Success To The Next Generation.” And we’re gonna be talking this week all about kids, and what we really imparted to our children to help them succeed. And you know, we’re actually seeing the fruit of this. Our kids are in their 30s now. We have three sons and they’re very, very blessed. And they’re blessed in their work, they’re blessed in their relationships with their spouses, with their wives, and they’re all blessed with their children. And they’re taking what we imparted to them and they’re imparting it to their children.
We’ve been talking about there’s three things that every parent needs to teach our children and every adult needs to have active and healthy in their life, and that is all of us should have a love for the word, a love for our families, and a practical trade. You should understand that you are created for destiny and purpose, divine destiny and purpose, that there is a God, that he loves you.
Amen.
And he has amazing plans for you. And so we begin to just talk about teaching our children and we need to have it in our heart, teaching our children to love the word and get it in us. It says, we read this, I think we’re just gonna look at Deuteronomy 6. And I wanna just talk about in verse five it says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength.” This is in the Old and New Testament. “And these words, which I command you today, shall be in your heart. And then parents, you are to teach them diligently to your children.” And we wanna bring out again that this is a talking about a lifestyle of love. We’re not talking about law, we’re talking about love. And we brought out that the Bible goes on and tells us how to get this love for the word in their heart. It’s a lifestyle.
Right.
It says, “When you shall teach them, when you are in your home, you when you talk, when you’re sitting down in your home, when you’re walking by the way, when you lie down, when you rise up,” again, it’s a lifestyle of love not law. And if you are passionate and joyous and in love with something, in love with somebody, you can’t help but talk about it.
Amen.
And we mention that, passion and joy is contagious.
Amen. I was just walking through the church before we started this broadcast and when I was walking through, I was just singing outta my spirit and just worshiping God. And I didn’t know that anybody was observing. And then I came back through where I had just been in just a few minutes after, and I greeted one of the workers here at the church and she said, “Pastor, I love your worship.” And I said, well, it just comes right out of my spirit. But that’s how it is with our children. Children learn what they live. And it wasn’t hard for us to impart this to our children. We call this teaching your book, “Imparting Success To The Next Generation,” because it’s something that they saw us live and it’s something that I know they observed in you, they observed in me, and we’re talking today about loving the word and how important the word of God is in our daily life. And I taught them I wanted our children, when they were young, when they started reading, you read a chapter of the Bible a day and then you really built on that because you said, “Well, what does that mean in your life?”
I would ask our children again, breakfast time, mealtime, dinner time being around the table was a very important time to me, that’s how I was raised. And we would talk and I would ask them, well what did you read? What did it mean to you? And so we were just talking earlier, yesterday, about having consistency and worship and how when our children are taught the word, great shall be their peace. I just wanted to bring out something else, we wanna talk about seeing God as the answer, but I also wanna bring something out that I loved about your grandfather, I loved about my parents, and that’s declaring his marvelous works because it goes right along within Deuteronomy 6. Because again, we’re talking about getting a love for the word. I might have just jumped ahead, we can go back. But I am so excited about this. We all talk about how amazing it is when we hear a testimony.
Right.
And the Bible tells us again this in Deuteronomy 6, and it talks about in verse 20, like why do we do these things? Why do we get to do these things? Why are we so in love with God and so excited about him? And this is in Deuteronomy 6-
Verse 20 to verse 24.
Yes, thank you. Did you wanna read it?
Yeah. “When your son will ask you in time to come saying, what do these testimonies mean in statutes and judgements, which the Lord our God has commanded you, then say to your son, were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the Lord showed signs and wonders upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh and upon his house before our eyes. And he brought us out from there that he might bring us into, give us the land which he swear to our fathers. And the Lord commanded us to do this word and to respect him for our good always, that he might preserve us alive as it is this day.”
You know in my Bible I have it written down, there’s another translation that says, “We stood there and watched God do it.
Hallelujah.
How many times can we recollect, and some of you watching where we say, God showed up, it was a God thing, and we need to tell our children these amazing things that God has done. And hun, this is what I wanted to bring out, why I got so excited. You were raised on a farm and ranch with grandparents, you’re around your grandparents. And then as we got married we farmed and ranched there together for the first three years of our marriage before we began a family. And one thing I liked about your grandfather, there was just something about him that he just radiated with the love of God. And just as he shared, as we would do chores, and you would walk with them out there in the country on the farm and ranch, he would just share things about God. And you could just tell he lived a life of faith and just loved the Lord. And I have to say, we’re talking about declaring his marvelous works, but your grandfather would even share things, what it was like when he was a little boy and how he would ride horseback to the one room school house. And how one time on the way to school riding horseback, he got sprayed by a skunk and he had already gone too far and he didn’t really have time to go back home. And so he went on to school and how he said, “Everybody sat on the other side of the schoolhouse.” And so it’s just fun as we share, our family, our faith in God, but just even important things like that, what was it like when you were young and how did God show up for you? And just really neat things about heritage.
Well, I think one thing that my grandfather and I worked for my grandfather from the time I was eight years old when we moved back to the farm until the time I was 23 when we went to Bible school to finish up Bible school. But in first Peter 3 it says this, it says, “Be of one mind,” in verse eight, “Be compassionate.” He’s talking about a husband, wife relationship, but this can be all relationships. And he says, “Love as brethren, be pitiful or be merciful, be courteous.” My grandfather was a very gracious person. But it says this, “Never render evil for evil or railing for railing.” In other words, bless people. It says, “Contrary, wise blessing, knowing that you are there to call that you should inherit a blessing, for he who will love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil in his lips that they speak no deceit.” And my grandfather was a very gracious man and my grandfather spoke words of grace. And I think that’s something that we can all learn to really help one another in living out the word, let the love of God be a real thing. But not only have we received grace, but be gracious to others and speak words of grace into others’ lives. And I know he did that with me as a young man and it really helped me.
I know, I like that you shared that, ’cause one thing that we really brought out with our children and in our marriage, we really brought out the importance of speaking life over one another.
Right.
And greeting one another. And I like that you brought that out. You’d already learned that from your grandfather. And just as I spent time with your grandfather, there’s something I really like and it’s in my book, seeing God as the Answer. And I want you to read Proverbs 3:5-6, if you don’t mind.
Yeah. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.”
Isn’t that awesome?
Amen.
That we can put our trust in the Lord. I like how a lot of times throughout the Bible, whenever it says, “Trust in the Lord,” that the person who trust in the Lord, you’re blessed, you’re fortunate.
Amen.
You’re happy.
Amen. And to be envied.
Yes.
And so praise God when we get ahold of the word and God and his word are one. And when you really love God, you’re gonna love the word and you get ahold of the word and your confidence in God will grow. You know the scripture says, “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Or faith comes by declaration and declaration by the mouth of God.” One reason that we want our children really to develop a relationship with the word is because it shows them who God is.
Amen.
And as they get to know the truth about who God really is, it will cause them to grow in faith and grow in their relationship with God. You know the scripture says, “Without faith, it’s impossible to please God. Because he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.” The message says, “He’ll believe both.” So when you go to the word and get to know who God is, you begin to understand that he’s good. Right. And you wanna have a relationship with God.
I like what you’re sharing. It really goes along with an another thing that I have in my book, And this is 1 John 5:4, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.”
Amen. So when you have a relationship with God through his word, amen. And when you’re born of his word, you know what, it causes you to begin to live this overcoming life. You see, the fact is not only do we find out who God is in the word, but we find out who we are in the Word.
Amen.
And then we begin to see God’s nature and life reflected in our lives. And some of you as you’re watching may need prayer. And we have prayer ministers that are here as we’re on television, and they’re ready to minister to people. And if you need prayer, we’re gonna go into a short break, but we’re gonna come back and we’re gonna talk more about how you can really see the word work in your life. But if you need to call in for prayer, we’re ready to receive your calls right now. And we wanna say a great big thank you. And we’re gonna be back in just a little bit. We’re gonna be sharing more how we can see God reflected in our life through our relationship with him in his words. So stay tuned, we’ll be right back. Hi friends, we’ve been teaching from Barbara’s book, “Imparting Success To The Next Generation.” These are principles that will help you establish a strong marriage, a strong home, and be a blessing to your children. We’ve also made the syllabus for this, free of charge on our website at CharisChristianCenter.com. Blessings. Past, present, and future tense sin were paid for on the cross by the blood. There is no other payment that needs to be paid for your forgiveness as far as God is concerned. He got over your sin at the cross and you need to let it go. You need to get over it. That is the gospel. Friends, I’m so glad you stayed with us. We’ve been sharing on “Imparting Success To The Next Generation,” and we’re sharing this week and today specifically on things that we taught our children that help them to be a success in life. And the number one thing that we’re talking about really today is teaching our children the value of God’s word. And as we do that, you said the number one thing we need to do is we need to see God as the answer. And so many people think God is the problem and they blame God. That doesn’t lead to a healthy relationship with God. But when you really know the truth from the word of God, you know that God is your answer, he is not your problem. Amen.
You know, my mom, I can just remember seeing her at the kitchen table and reading the word and then underlining and underlining or highlighting, and something that we did, we’re talking about teaching our children to love the word and seeing as the answer. We’ve got different topics here we’re talking about, but my mom was really the one who taught me about faith.
Amen.
And looking to the word that how we can stand on his promises. Another thing we do, even when we pray for people, when they come up for prayer, for healing or anything, we ask ’em, well, what scripture are you standing on?
Amen.
In other words, do you understand that this is in the Bible? Let me explain, this is 1 John 5:14. It says, “Now this is the confidence that we have in him, if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” You brought out it’s good to read the word, teach our children to read the Word, it shows you who God is.
Right. And when you understand God, is God’s will is consistent with his word, it’s consistent with his nature, with who he is. Actually, Psalm 138:2 says, “That he’s magnified his word above his very name.” So God’s not gonna do anything that’s against his will, against his word, against his nature. And when you really understand that God is a good God and he has good things for you, you know what, you’re gonna come to God instead of running from God. But the way that God has been presented in a lot of settings is a lot of people are running from God instead of to God, because they don’t understand the true nature of God. And as you study the scripture, we begin to understand who God is, that he’s our provider, that he’s our healer, that he’s our deliverer, that he protects us, that he’s our sanctification, he’s our righteousness, he’s our peace and our provision. And finally, that he’s there. Jesus said, “I’ll never leave you or forsake you.” And those statements come from the seven redemptive names of God that we find in the Old Testament. But as you study the word, you see who God is. And then when you study the gospels, you see Christ represents the Father. And then you study the epistles, you find out that Christ took up residence on the inside of us. And all of that fits together.
You know, we talked about, I love how you shared all that, we talked about in Deuteronomy 6, about parents get the word in you then diligently teach it to your children, then tell of his marvelous works.
Amen.
And I liken Psalm 9:1, it says, “I will praise you Lord. with my whole heart.”
Amen.
“I will tell of your marvelous works.”
Praise God.
We don’t wanna leave that out as we come together, I talked about your grandfather, how he would share really awesome stories and how important it was as we were raising our children when we came to the table, that we talked about God and how all things are possible with him.
Right. And another thing, we grew up pastoring a small town, raised our children in that area, and there wasn’t always a lot of excess, but we never talked to our children about lack. We talked to our children about what we had, and we had this opportunity really to serve God. And it helps children with their image of God when they know that God is a good God, which is what the scripture actually teaches. And that he wants to do good things in our lives. And a lot of people really have a They don’t have the right image of God. And if you don’t have the right image of God, it’s really gonna be hard for you to operate in faith towards him. But when you have the right image of God, that God’s a good God, you know that God does good things. And we talked to our children when God came through for us as we believed him, we always talked about the goodness of God and the good things that he had done. And it helped our children in their relationship and they saw God in our lives.
You know, we live in a world that’s been affected by sin, and so sometimes there are challenging circumstances, but we don’t preach challenging circumstances, you preach the word of God, which is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We stand on God’s word because all those other things are subject to change. And again, so we would bring out scriptures, all things are possible with God. And I love that the names of God, one of his names is the God of more than enough.
Amen.
And that’s what we would talk about.
Amen. And as we talk about this, we look to God and he is our answer, he is not our problem.
Amen.
And we don’t blame God for the problems.
Right.
And another thing that we looked and we taught our children is that God’s word is the final authority.
Amen.
And when you look to the word of God as the final authority, it settles a lot of things. We live in a world that they think truth is relevant. Well, truth is truth. And Jesus said, “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.” And really it’s the word that separates us from the world around us. And Barbara, I suppose you turned to Psalm 119:9-11, that’s a great scripture. So go ahead and share that.
Again, we’re talking about looking to God’s word as a final authority. And again, in Psalm 119:9-11, it says, “How can a young man cleanse his way by taking heed according to your word, with my whole heart, I have sought you, oh, let me not wander from your commandments, your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.” If you can get the word of God in our heart and in our children, it’s not only sinning, but I believe you’re not gonna be so easily deceived.
Right.
We’ve talked about this a lot of times in our ministry, that you have God who loves us, you have the enemy of God, who is the devil, the great deceiver.
Right.
And when we can get the word of God in our heart, you’re not gonna be deceived or fall for that. This started clear back in the garden with Adam and Eve. The devil came and got them to focus on lack. And there was no lack in the garden of Eden.
Well what Satan did in the garden, he still uses the same tricks, right? He twisted the word of God and then he outright contradicted the word of God and he got Eve to believe a lie. And that’s what he’s still doing, he’ll twist the word of God, and then he’ll outright contradict the word of God to where you believe something other than the truth of the Word of God. But we go back to the truth of the Word of God. The Bible says this in Psalm 119, I believe it’s verse 130, and it says, “The entrance of the word gives light and gives understanding to the simple.” And if you’ll take a simple attitude towards the word of God and just believe that it brings light, it brings understanding, it brings revelation. There’s a lot of lies that are brought in the world. And we sent our kids into just the public school setting, so on and so forth. But we taught them the basic principles of the word of God. We didn’t teach ’em all the lies in the world, we didn’t teach ’em all the lies of evolution or all the lies of different things, but we taught ’em the basic principles of the Word of God, of the scripture, in the beginning God created the heaven and earth. And truth is stronger than a lie.
Amen.
And light is stronger than darkness. And love is stronger than hatred and life is stronger than death. And when we did that, our children got revelation right from the word of God and their relationship with God. And they were able to take things to a level beyond where we’re even at.
I like what you’re sharing. It really goes along with the next scripture passage I wanted to share. And this is Proverbs 4:20-23. And it says, “My son, give attention to my words, incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes. Keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life to those who find them and health to all their flesh.” I like that.
Amen.
Life to those who find them.
Amen. The word of God is life. And the word of God gives us direction and it’s life to everyone who finds it. And it says, “And health to all their flesh.” You know that word for health if you study that out in the Hebrew is Marpe, it’s talking about medicine. And I know even one of our sons has found this working in our life when he was attacked with physical sickness, as he would take healing scriptures and meditate them, he put ’em on a key ring, and as he would meditate them, his physical symptoms would actually change towards the positive when he meditated-
Amen.
On the word of God. So thank God the word is life and the word is health. And the word gives light, the word gives counsel, the word gives understanding.
Amen.
The word gives us direction in life.
That’s right. I might have you read Psalm 119:105.
Psalm 119:105. I should know it.
Well, your word is a lamp.
Yeah. “Your word is a light unto my feet and a lamp under my path.” And so praise God, the word brings light. The word brings The word keeps us from stumbling. As we direct our lives, we need to let the word of God be the final authority in our life. A decision that I’ve made, James 1:18 says, “We’re born again by the word of God’s own word. He begat us with the word of truth, that we’d be a first fruit of his creation.”
Wow.
But he goes on to say this in James 1:21, “Receive with meekness the engrafted word.” So I take a meek attitude towards the word of God. And if the word of God is telling me to go a direction, I’ve been going a different direction, I submit myself to the word of God. And then the Bible goes on to say in verse 22, “Be doers of the word and not hears only, deceiving your own selves.” And then finally, James 1:25 says, “Whoever continues,” and he calls the new covenant, “in this perfect law of liberty, this person shall be blessed in their deed.” And really, we’ve seen these blessings come in our lives as we’ve continued to submit, surrender to the word of God, receive it with meekness, be doers of the word, and just continue to believe the word of God.”
I have one more scripture I wanna share before we have to end today, and this is Proverbs 30:5, “Every word of God is pure. He is a shield to those who put their trust in him.”
Amen. So thank God today for the word of God. The word of God is pure. There’s protection in it. And it says, “God is a shield of those who put their trust in him.” And when you go to the word of God, it brings light, it brings understanding, it brings direction, it brings revelation, it brings strength, it brings health and it brings blessing.
