Pastor Heather Perdue
As I had coffee this morning, I thought about how God’s unchanging nature offers stability in a shifting world. I don’t know about you, but I like stability. I’m amazed at the breakneck speed that everything around me seems to be changing. Our culture has changed so much since I was a kid; people’s values seem fluid based on what’s portrayed in the media; my kids continually go through different stages; and even the weather is constantly changing. We often laugh that Colorado’s weather changes so frequently that you can experience all four seasons in one day.
When I feel overwhelmed by things changing, I find comfort in knowing that God is unchanging. You might have heard a preacher talk about God being immutable, meaning God is unchanging. In order to change, something would need to be added or subtracted from it. God is perfect; nothing can or needs to be added or subtracted from perfection.
The Bible contains many verses about God being unchanging.
-
- Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”
- Malachi 3:6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.”
- James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no change or shadow of turning.”
- Psalm 102:27 “But You are the same, and Your years shall have no end.”
I’m so thankful to worship an unchanging God. Finding such peace in knowing that God hasn’t changed and never will bring me comfort. The same God who walked in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve accompanies me everywhere and speaks with me. The same God who helped David fight against the giant, Goliath, fights with me and for me—never against me. The same God who earned the name Jehovah Rapha, the God who Heals, continues to heal today. The same God who remained faithful to the Israelites shows faithfulness to me with every breath I take. Consider some Bible stories where God appeared to help someone experiencing what you’re facing now. You can rely on God to keep His promises and do for you what He has done for them because He is an unchanging God!
God is unchanging; therefore, His true nature of being loving, merciful, and faithful doesn’t change—EVER! I am so overwhelmed with amazement that nothing I can do or say—no matter how foolish I am—can change God’s unconditional love for me! God’s unconditional love cannot change because it’s based on His grace and not what I do. Even when I find it hard to love myself, God is right there showing me His love. Jeremiah 31:3 says, “… I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”
When I need mercy, I don’t worry that I have used up my quota. Psalm 136:1 reminds me, “Oh, give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever.”
I can think of the times throughout my life when I have not been faithful to God. I wouldn’t blame God if He got tired of my faithlessness, but God’s faithfulness is unchanging and doesn’t depend on what I do or fail to do. 2 Timothy 2:13 “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”
I hope you are encouraged that the unchanging God loves you no matter what happens in this crazy world. I wake up every day thrilled to know that when the world around me changes—I can count on the fact that God is unchanging!
