Freedom
Jesus came to preach the gospel and to set the captives free! Many people are enslaved by sin, past mistakes, legalism, or self-reliance. Jesus wants to set you completely free so you can be everything God has created you to be! Today is the day to let Jesus reign in you and through you!
Journey of Faith
Welcome, friends of the broadcast. We’re so glad that you’ve tuned in today. We’ve been sharing all week about freedom. I believe that God wants you to walk in freedom. You can be free. That’s what Jesus preached. You can be free spiritually, you can be free emotionally, you can be free physically, you can be free financially, but how do you receive it? We’re gonna talk about that today. Stay tuned. Friend, welcome to the broadcast. I’m so glad that you’ve tuned in today. We’re talking about freedom all of this week, and we’ve been talking about how we can receive true freedom. And I believe that when you read the Bible and believe what it says, that freedom is available both spiritually, emotionally, physically, and financially. And I believe that freedom is available. First of all, spiritual freedom can only be found through Jesus Christ. And if you don’t know Jesus, you know what? You need to come to know Jesus. But when you know Jesus, then, and then you begin to understand the promises of the Word, you can not only receive spiritually spiritual freedom and be free from both the penalty for sin, right? Which Jesus paid for with His blood, but the power of sin, which He places His Spirit within you to help you overcome. But you can be free emotionally. You renew your mind in the Word. You don’t have to be a emotional train wreck. You know, Jesus, the Bible says, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him in Isaiah 53. And you know, Jesus not only took our spiritual transgressions and sins and took our physical healing by His stripes, the scripture says we are healed in Isaiah 53:5. It says we were healed in 1 Peter 2:24. But it says, “The chastisement of our peace was upon Him.” Jesus took our anxiety. Before Jesus went to the cross, He sweat, as it were, great drops of blood in the garden of Gethsemane. And only people in extreme emotional trauma will sweat blood. That’s a physical reality. But Jesus, it says the chastisement of our peace so we can, was upon him. So we can be free spiritually from sin, we can be free emotionally from anxiety, we can be free physically by His stripes. The scripture says we are healed and we were healed. Psalm 103 says this in verse three that He forgives all of our iniquities and heals all of our diseases. If you’re born again, if you’re a believer in Jesus, you have a covenant right to receive physical healing in your body, but we can also be free financially. The Bible says that Jesus was made poor so that we, through his poverty, can be made rich. That’s in 2 Corinthians 8:9. And what that’s talking about was when Jesus died on the cross, he left everything. He became poor as a beggar that we might receive, be rich. When you identify with Jesus and the cross, you can then identify with the promises of God. But we’ve been talking about how do we receive it? We receive it, number one, through receiving Jesus. And we talked about in John 8:36, how Jesus said, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” Jesus is the only one who was God who became a man. He was born of a virgin, and he lived a sinless, holy, perfect life and died on the cross for our sins. And then God raised Him from the dead in the physical body and Jesus then sent the Holy Spirit. Jesus is coming again. Jesus is the Messiah. Only through Jesus can we truly be free in a spiritual sense. But emotionally, we can be free when we receive the truth of the gospel, when we believe what the Bible says about us. You know, the Bible says this in Psalm 119:165, “Great peace have they that love thy law and nothing shall offend them.” We can be free physically. That Jesus took stripes for our healing and we can be free financially. Man, when you believe the promises of God, you know you can be blessed. God doesn’t want you to be poor. The Bible says that God delights in the prosperity of His servant. That’s in Psalm 35:27. John said, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers. Philippians 4:19, talking to a body of believers who were partners of Paul, he said, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Man, it is through Jesus. True freedom comes through Jesus. So we talked about, first of all, through Jesus, then we talked about through renewing your mind in the Word of God. Man, understanding what the Bible says to those who believed on Him. In John eight, Jesus said, “If you continue in my Word,” John 8:31, “you will know the truth. You’ll become my disciples indeed and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.” It takes the truth of the Word of God to be free. But the third thing is through the Holy Spirit. And God wants us to be free through the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Yeah, I wanted to read a verse actually about the Holy Spirit just helping us-
Yeah.
experience freedom. And I wanna read here in Romans 8:26 is it says, “Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Yes.
True intercessory prayer is when you’re actually joining with the intercessor.
Yes.
Which is the Holy Spirit. Jesus is also our intercessor-
Yeah.
before the Father. So that’s true intercessory prayer, but the Holy Spirit will help you. It says in verse 27, “He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” And I love verse 28, it says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Amen.
So Holy Spirit, He’s gonna help you walk in freedom and experience freedom. And notice He says he’ll help you in your weaknesses.
Right.
Life isn’t always perfect. We’re gonna deal with difficulties. Things happen. We live in an imperfect world, and sometimes there’s stressful things that happen, but I believe that when you love God and you’re living with His purpose-
Right.
And you have the Holy Spirit helping you, He can turn a bad situation around and make it better than you even thought.
Amen. And we know.
Yeah. And-
Pastor Lawson.
I actually shared this verse recently for an offering message I did about God working all things together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Recently, in my family and I, we were supposed to take a vacation to Florida and we bought the tickets in our Airbnb months in advance. But you know, right when we’re supposed to go, this major hurricane was supposed to hit. And God, it was a little bit of a struggle, but we were able to get refunded with our flights and the Airbnb there, and it was just three days before we were supposed to go on our trip. We had, I had work, you know, off, and my kids were out of school and, you know. So three days before, I just did a search, you know, of where to go. And I found we could go to Hawaii for the same price. And we actually got an Airbnb that was like a third of the price it normally was. We had a much nicer vacation that would normally cost three times that price. So God took this bad thing-
Amen.
and worked it out for good. But I believe part of that was because we live with purpose, we’re givers. You know? And if you’re not really living with purpose and living with God’s purpose for you, things don’t always work out better than-
Amen.
what you might think. But I think that’s a promise for forgivers, a promise for people who love God, a promise for people who live with purpose.
Amen.
That things are gonna work out better than you even thought possible.
Amen. It’s great. You know, this scripture in Romans 8:26 when it says, “The Spirit helps our infirmities,” in the literal Greek, it says something like this. The Holy Spirit takes hold together with us against our weaknesses. You know, where devil tries to attack anyone is at their weakest point. But he says the Holy Spirit, when we can’t deal with it in our own strength, we have Jesus. We have the Word of God, but we also have the Holy Spirit and He’ll take hold together with us against our weaknesses. And He moves them out of the way. And He says we don’t know how to pray like we should. There’s times I don’t know how to pray, but you know, I received something when I was 14 years old. I was born again when I was eight. So six years after I received Jesus as my Savior, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. And I began to speak in other tongues. And when I did that, it’s just like the Word of God came alive to me. The promises of God.
Well, and Paul talks about praying in tongues quite a bit. He said, I pray in the Spirit, and I pray with my understanding. So that means when you’re praying in the Spirit, it’s not with your understanding. Your brain isn’t understanding what-
Yeah.
what you’re praying. It’s your spirit praying directly to God. And you know, Paul said this. He said, “I thank God that I pray in tongues more than you all.”
Yeah.
You know, what an awesome thing to say. And if Paul prayed in tongues, you know, if you thought he prayed in tongues more than everyone else, I think it’s a good thing if Paul did it.
Well, he’s actually rebuking the church for being out of order because all they were doing when they were coming together was speaking in tongues. And he said, “When we come together, we need to have some interpretation and revelation. There needs to be teaching, there needs to be order.” But he said, “I thank God.” Why do you think Paul, who didn’t walk with Jesus physically on the earth, right? He wasn’t part of Jesus’ disciples. Yet he writes about half of the New Testament. You know, I think he prayed in the Holy Spirit and got revelation. And God gave him revelation. Now, he was a student. He studied at the feet of Gamaliel. He had learned a lot of things, but he was a legalist. But when he got saved, and then shortly after he got saved, God sent Ananias to lay hands on him, and Ananias laid hands on him, and he received the Holy Spirit. And I believe as he prayed in tongues, the Holy Spirit brought revelation to all this Old Testament knowledge that he had. And as He brought that revelation and helped him, and he says, “The Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.” One translation says, “For groanings that cannot be uttered in an intelligent language.” And then it says in verse 27, “And He who searches the hearts,” who searches the heart? Jesus. I believe the Holy Spirit comes into agreement with Jesus, right? He knows the mind of the Spirit because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. What is the will of the Father? It’s known in the Word. I believe the Holy Spirit takes the things that are the Father’s will and Jesus is searching your heart. And the Holy Spirit comes into agreement with what God the Father promised us. You know, God’s will is for our life. And what Jesus is searching our heart and knows and causes those things to come to pass.
And I love that we’re talking about the Holy Spirit bringing freedom, true freedom. You know, there’s a lot of churches that don’t really talk about the Holy Spirit. They put the Holy Spirit in a backroom closet somewhere, and they aren’t really surrendered to the Holy Spirit. You need to surrender to the Father, to Jesus, to the Word, but you need to surrender to the Holy Spirit-
Amen.
to the ministry of the Holy Spirit, to the Amen person of the Holy Spirit.
You know, this is a Spirit-filled church. And I grew up in a traditional church, but when I got baptized in the Holy Spirit and found out the truth, I thought, “You know, if I have to drive a hundred miles to go to a church like this, I’m gonna go to a church that teaches the full gospel.” And you know, I got people that drive hundreds of miles to come to this church. Nearly every Sunday, we have people from across the nation, across the world. And you know, people that are driving hundreds of miles to be here and receive the Word of God. But if you need a good church, we’d love to have you at Charis Christian Center. Friends, we’ve been sharing on freedom, and I have a lot to share about freedom. Actually, my book, “Absolute Victory in Christ,” covers the way we teach about being free. Number one, through knowing Jesus. Number two, through believing the Word. And number three, through receiving the Holy Spirit. You can get that book on Amazon or on our website at Charis Christian Center, and also many free teachings on freedom. The Word of God will work for you. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, it doesn’t matter where you came from. Glory to God, it matters what you believe. And you need to begin to believe what God said about you because anywhere in the world, that people will believe the Bible can prosper. And He said, “You have a revelation of it. So I want you to teach it.” Hallelujah. Friends, I’m so glad you stayed with us. We’ve been talking about how it takes both Jesus, first Jesus, then it takes renewing your mind in the Word of God, but it also takes the Holy Spirit, you know, to begin to walk in true freedom. And the Holy Spirit actually helped, will help you renew your mind too.
Well, I’ve seen people that, you know, for whatever reason, that they’d received Jesus, but for years they hadn’t received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But when they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, that’s actually ushers in a lot of freedom in their life. I’ve seen people that received the baptism Holy Spirit, and they were set free physically. They might’ve had a physical disability, a physical ailment-
Right.
that really plagued them was bondage and they were set free from that. You know, the ministry of the Holy Spirit brings freedom. And I’ve seen people too that have just dealt with a lot of oppression, anxiety, depression, and just emotionally in their mind, just be set free when they receive the Holy Spirit, pray in tongues, just experience that freedom.
Yeah. And so we’ve been studying here in Romans chapter eight where it says, “The Spirit helps our weaknesses. We don’t know how to pray like we should, but the Holy Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.” And I believe it. In verse 27, He’s talking about the Holy Spirit searches the hearts and knows the mind of the Spirit or Jesus is searching the heart and knows the mind of the Spirit because Jesus makes intercession and the Holy Spirit makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Man, the Holy Spirit and Jesus know the will of God and they bring you in to the things of God. But I love this verse in 20, verse 28, it says, “And we know.” You know, we just went through a really hard time here in the church, different problems that happened, different people had separated, but I had this minister of the gospel came in and minister to me, and he just said, “And we know.” And I got a hold of that. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God and who are called according to His purpose. Man, we know. You know, I’ve seen things that are very negative. But when you know, and that was just ministering to me even as we’re sharing it in the broadcast. And we know. I was thinking about some different things that you’d look at that you could think were negative. And God said, “No, we know.” We know that all things work together for good to those who love God and who are called according to His purpose. Man, we can know these things. And these things are working together for our good. And what the devil meant to destroy us many times, God will turn around and use for our good. Amen. And we gotta keep the scriptures. So keep renewing your mind in the Word of God. Keep believing Jesus and keep praying in the Spirit. You know what? Turn to another scripture. And this one’s found in 2 Corinthians chapter three. And in 2 Corinthians chapter three, what’s happening is Paul is comparing the old covenant in the new covenant. And he’s talking about how the old covenant had a glory, you know? When the law was given. But people died, you know? And there are people that are still caught up with the law and the Old Testament. And I’m thinking sometimes why are these people so enamored with all this?
Whenever you see a great move of God, a great move of the Holy Spirit, it always, it really brings, there’s freedom there too.
Yeah.
I was thinking about the early Pentecostal Revivals, like in the early 1900s, the Azusa Street with John G. Lake, and you know, the world was very separated, very divided, but like at that Revival, there were white people, there were Black people, there was male, there was female, there was a rich, there was poor. The true minister of the Holy Spirit, it just breaks those divisions.
Amen.
And people always try to bring back these divisions, you know?
Amen.
But the true move of the Holy Spirit, it’s not about race. It’s not about rich or poor, it’s not about gender. It’s man, and you see that all through scripture too when there’s an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. You know, even on the day of Pentecost, there were Jews from all around. You know, from all around the world, gathered there for that feast. And the ministry of Holy Spirit impacted all of them.
Right, the Holy Spirit brought revelation to them. Actually, it talks about this here in 2 Corinthians 3:13. It’s talking about this comparison, right? Of the old covenant and new covenant. And it says, “Seeing that we have this hope in Jesus,” in verse 12. “We use great boldness of speech and not as Moses who put a veil over his face that the children of Israel could not steadfastly look at the end of that which is lost.” He’s talking about the law. We’ve come into a greater covenant. Right, the new covenant. But their minds were blinded for until that day remains the same veil untaken away in the reading of the Old Testament. When Moses came off that mountain and had been in the presence of God, he had to put a veil over his face ’cause they couldn’t look at him ’cause the glory was so bright. But he says, “Even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless, when it, when their heart turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” For you to get revelation, you gotta turn your heart to Jesus, right? But it says, “Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” Right? There is freedom. How do we get free? Through knowing Jesus, through believing the Word, and through allowing the Holy Spirit to work in our life. But we all, with an open face, right? The veil has been removed, beholding as in a mirror, the glory of the Lord. We look into the mirror of the Word and we see Jesus. We are changed into that same image, into the image of Jesus from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. If you take this in context, what he’s saying is we go from the glory of the law to the glory of grace by the Spirit of God. It takes the Spirit of God, it takes the Holy Spirit to give us a revelation of the true gospel. And the true gospel is the gospel of Jesus. And it brings freedom. It’s the message of freedom. Jesus, when He opened his earthly ministry, preached freedom to set at liberty those who are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, to preach to deliverance to the captives. The gospel is the message of freedom. You can be free spiritually. You don’t have to be bound in sin. Jesus came to deliver you from not only the penalty for sin, but the power of sin spiritually, emotionally. You can renew your mind in the Word of God, right? But also physically and financially. These promises can come to you. Praise God you got promises for physical healing, for financial provision. And when you believe the Word of God, amen, and let the Holy Spirit work, the Holy Spirit will bring you into revelation of these things and you can begin to walk in that freedom. And it’s not by our performance, it’s by His grace. And the spirit of God makes these things a revelation. You know, years ago we had this teacher at Charis Bible College, and I was teaching there, but he did not have a revelation of grace. He’s a great man, a good man. Operated in the gifts of the Spirit. Amazing person, kept his word, but he didn’t have a revelation of grace. And so I got this teaching from a minister on grace on Jesus Plus Nothing. And I actually have a series on our website. You can get it. It’s on the book of Galatians, Jesus Plus Nothing talking about freedom. And you can download the audios. There are videos there you can download. They’re free of charge. We give them free of charge. It’s costing me hundreds of thousands of dollars to make this available to you. But I got this teaching from this other man and I put it on this guy’s desk. And then I told Andrew Wommack, you know, the president, founder of Charis Bible College at that time, I said, “Hey Andrew, I took this teaching on Jesus Plus Nothing from this certain teacher, a pastor of a church, and put it on this guy’s desk.” And Andrew said, “Do you know who taught that man that?” I’m like, “No.” He’s like, “I taught that pastor that.” And he said, “When I taught him that, he was pastoring this church of several hundred.” But he said, you know, he started teaching grace and this gospel of freedom. And the elders kicked him out of his own church and he had to go start over. But now he has several thousand people. So he said, “I guess it worked out good.” But he said, “I taught them. But Andrew made a statement to me.” He said, “I believe that it takes the Holy Spirit to give you a revelation of the gospel, a revelation of freedom, a revelation of grace. And if the Holy Spirit doesn’t give it to you, you’re not gonna get it.” Man, I pastored for about seven years before I got a revelation of grace. And it changed my ministry, changed my family, changed my life. Man, it changed almost everything. But it takes the Holy Spirit. And I said, “Andrew, that’s right.” And Andrew said, “I’ve preached the grace of God all over the world, but there are people who just, they just don’t get it.” And I was like that until God made it a revelation. You know what? I didn’t get it. But when the Holy Spirit made the gospel, made the grace of God, I’ve actually pastored for seven years before I got a true revelation of grace. And I was actually ministering with Andrew the other day, and Mike and Carrie Pickett on one of their TV shows, and Carrie Pickett grew up in our church, but Andrew said, asked me this question, or Mike Pickett actually asked me this. He said, “How did the revelation of grace affect you personally?” The number one thing it did for me is it freed me from self-condemnation. And you know what? There’s a lot of believers that are operating in a lot of condemnation and it is not God. And it takes the Holy Spirit to give you a revelation of the gospel, a revelation of the grace of God. But if you get it, you don’t have to walk condemned and you can begin to walk in the blessing of the Lord in the promises of God, in the good things of God at a brand new level. And so it says, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” And it says, “And we, with a open face, we’ve opened, removed the veil of the law, and we’re looking into the Word of God and seeing Jesus and we’re changed in the image of Jesus from the glory of the law to the glory of grace, even by the Spirit of the Lord.”
I believe, you know, as you just surrender to Jesus, surrender to the Holy Spirit, just keep trusting the Word of God, you’ll experience freedom like never before. You know, enemy’s always trying to put these weights and burdens on people.
Amen.
And he’s always trying to weigh down believers, try to weigh down people of faith. But you can come to Jesus, you can let the Holy Spirit minister to you-
Amen.
and experience freedom. You don’t have to stay stuck.
Praise God. You know, we’ve got all these teachings, hundreds of hours of teaching on this and many more, and they’re on our website at charischristiancenter.com. They’re free of charge.
