Praise the Lord friends. I am so glad that you are connected with us today. We are sharing on Romans, the Revelation of Righteousness. And if you get a revelation of righteousness, it will revolutionize your life. And so we want you to open your heart, receive the word of God. Today we’re in Romans chapter six, and we’re gonna be talking about four reasons that we’re free from sin. Praise God. We’re dead to it. We’re free from it. We have authority over it and it’ll heal you. So stay tuned. Blessings. I’m so glad you were with us friends. We are sharing today on Romans chapter six, and we just got done yesterday in Romans chapter five. And we talked about the fact that we left the reign of sin and death, and we’ve come into the reign of grace and righteousness by faith in Jesus. And now since we’ve put faith in Jesus, we are in a reign in life. Romans 5:17 basically says all those things. And if you study it out in the Greek, it says we’re to reign in life as king. So when we go into Roman six, seven and eight. In Roman, six, seven, and eight, what Paul is really saying is now here’s how we live as people who have left the reign of sin and death, come into the reign of grace and righteousness as people who have received the righteousness of God. He says in Roman six, “We’re dead to sin.” In Romans chapter seven. “We’re dead to the law.” And in Romans chapter eight, “We’re alive in the spirit.” And when you begin to understand that it completely changes how you live your life. Now, if you take Roman six, you tie it back to Romans chapter one, in Romans one Paul said the Gentiles or the worldly people, unchurched people are basically caught up in philosophy, idolatry, lust, all kinds of ungodliness. If you take Roman seven, where he says we’re dead to the law, it ties back to Romans two, where he says the Jews or church people, religious people are caught up in legalism. And so then we we’ve left the reign of sin and death, we dead to sin. We’re dead to the law and we’re alive in the spirit. Now let’s jump in Roman chapter one. Roman chapter 6:1, he says, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may have bound?” I’ll let you answer that Aaron.
Definitely not. I love these questions that Paul asked. He asked a lot of rhetorical questions, but these are probably questions that he got on a regular basis. So that’s probably why he’s addressing some of these questions.
And he says, “God forbid.” I mean, he says it in the strongest language that he can preaching in church without offending people. He says, God forbid really, really strong language. Paul is preaching. Paul is sharing. And so when he says that, he says that a number of times in Romans chapter, in the book of Romans.
Well, you’ve probably seen this several times I have or where some people actually don’t have a really great understanding of grace and not really a great understanding of Roman 6:1 and two. And they take grace as a license to sin. And just.
Well, I’ve seen that.
It’s almost universalism grace universalism.
Yeah, so we’ve seen that. And that’s when people take grace and go to an extreme on that side. But I’ve also seen this when you teach, if you adequately teach the grace of God and righteousness, people should be asking that question. So the first time I taught this in Colorado Springs and this had to be a good 15 years ago, I taught the Book of Romans and I taught it was in, we were in actually meeting in Andrew Wommack’s building at 850 Elkton drive. And when we were meeting there, I talked through Romans five in two lessons. It’s like I did in this series. Romans, the Revelation of Righteousness is a four CD series that covers the whole Book of Romans. But when I did that, when I got done teaching in Romans five, I went to my office the next morning on Monday morning. And I had this question from a lady in church and she said, “Pastor, what are you saying? Are you saying since we’ve received the righteousness of God and the grace of God, we can just go live and sin?” And if you’re really preaching the grace of God, people should be asking that question. And Paul answers it for them. He says, “God forbid.” And that’s not the intentions of this at all. So I called her up and said, “Come back to church next week.” Hallelujah. “And I’m gonna answer that question.” And he tells us four reasons in Romans chapter six, that we don’t go on and live in sin. He says, first of all in verse two, “How shall we who are dead to sin live and any longer in it?” Number one, we don’t sin because we’re dead to it. Number two, we don’t sin because we’re free from it. Romans 6:7 Number three, we don’t sin as believers. We should not sin because we have authority over it. Romans 6:12 and 14 and Romans 6:23. The last reason you don’t wanna sin is because the wages of sin is death. Sin is deadly. Sin is stupid. Any way you cut it.
I like what we were talking about yesterday in Romans five, talking about how we’ve left the reign of sin and death and gone into the reign of life and righteousness really through Jesus. So that word reign, it’s kind of talking about a kingdom. So we’ve left this kingdom of law keeping ,of sin, of death. We’ve gone into a new kingdom, this kingdom that Jesus Christ ushered in. So if you’re living in another kingdom, if you’re a citizen of this new kingdom, you’re gonna live in that kingdom.
Amen.
So living for sin, living for the world, living for the sin and living just for the flesh, living for carnality carnal desires, you’re not in that kingdom. So don’t live like that. You’ve been placed into a new kingdom.
Glory to God. This is exactly what Colossians 1:13 says, it says that Jesus delivered us from the dominion, from the power, from the authority of darkness and translated into the kingdom of His dear Son or God delivered us from the dominion, from the authority, from the power of darkness and translated. We’ve been translated. We’ve been taken out of one and we’ve been translated into the other. We’ve been taken out of darkness and translated into light. We’ve been taken outta sin and translated into righteousness. We’ve been taken out of sickness and translated into health. We’ve been taken out of poverty and translated into wealth. We’ve been taken out of anxiety and trans… It’s a kingdom. It has all these things in it. Health and well, I know people get mad when we preach that, but you know what John said, 3rd John 2. “Beloved I wish above all things that you prosper and be in health.” But we left the kingdom of darkness and that’s why we don’t wanna live in sin because we want the good things of the kingdom to work in us. Now, Aaron you are an outstanding, outstanding example of this, because when you went to college, you didn’t go to a Christian college. You went to a secular, a worldly college. And there were a lot of people that were caught up in sin, but you didn’t get caught up in it. Praise God, because you focused on Jesus. Praise God. And so you don’t have to get caught up with the world around you. Amen. You went to Carnegie Mellon, got your four year degree, your BA, and then you went to Rice University in Texas, and you got your master’s and your doctorate there. And you had all kinds of ungodly people.
Well, yeah, as we get closer and closer to Christ return, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “What’s it gonna be like when you return?” And He said, “As in the days of Noah.” So those weren’t pretty days and things aren’t gonna be pretty when Christ returns. And I think we’re getting closer and closer to that return. So just remember we are in the world, but we are not of this world. We are of His kingdom now.
Amen. So in Roman six, we go on to read it. He begins to tell us how we can live this victorious life over sin. Number one, he says we’re dead to it in verse two. So he says don’t you know, that is in verse three. “So as many of us were baptized into Jesus, were baptized into His death. Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into His death. That like Christ was raised up from the death, by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in the newness of life, for if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death.” In verse five, “We will be also raised.” You have to read that into that. “In the likeness of His resurrection.” So he says, you’ve gotta identify with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. In death He died to sin. In resurrection He lives to God. Now what about the burial? What’s that mean? When you plant a seed, what happens to it?
It dies.
It dies and it changes form. And it comes up in a brand new form. So when we identify with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, we’re saying, “Man, I died to sin, but I’m coming back in a brand new form, because the seed of the word has been planted in my spirit.” That’s really what happened. He goes on and says this. He says, “Knowing this.” There’s some things that we have to know as believers. You know what you don’t know can hurt you. The Bible says that my people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge in Hosea 4:6. It says in Isaiah 5:13, “They’re kept in bondage because they have no knowledge.” So there’s some things we gotta know. “Knowing that our old man, our old nature is crucified with Him. That the body of sin might be destroyed. That hence forth or from this point, we should no longer serve sin.” We are no longer slaves of Satan and servants of sin. Praise God. We’ve been set free. And that’s what he says in verse seven. “For he who is dead, is freed from sin.” Sin doesn’t have any dominion over a dead man. You can find the worst alcoholic that’s ever lived in Colorado Springs in the graveyard and dig him up and you can buy him a bottle of the best liquor that money can buy. And he’s not gonna drink a drop, because he is a dead man. Glory to God, man. So sin no longer has dominion over us.
We’re free from sin. I like what it says in verse seven.
We died to it and we’re free from it. Isn’t that good? So there’s not this struggle. A dead man does not struggle with sin and too many people in the body of Christ have this battle, this struggle going on with sin. And it’s because they’re living in Romans chapter seven primarily, and they’ve got this legalistic mentality and they think they’re this wild dog. And you know what? They live like a bunch of wild dogs and you’re not a dog. You’re a child of God. You’re born of the spirit. Jesus lives in you. You’re the righteousness of God, sanctified by the blood of Jesus, justified holy. That’s what God made you in Christ. And when you understand that it changes how you live your life. And so he says, “If we be dead with Christ, we believe we’ll also live with Him.” You talked about that a little bit.
Yeah. I remember when I was going to school, going to different Bible studies with people from different backgrounds within Christianity, a lot of people, you can just hear it when they pray, you really hear their theology. They pray as a sinner. They identify as a sinner and pray as a sinner. If I were to give a lot of Christians just two checks, check boxes, are you a saint or are you a sinner? A lot of Christians would check, well, I’m a sinner, but if you’ve received Jesus, you are no longer a sinner. You are a saint, you were a sinner, but now you’re a saint. You’ve been saved by grace and you’re gonna continue being a saint. You continue God’s abundance of grace is still operating in your life.
You see we are saints. And 1 Corinthians 1:30 says, “Christ was made under us.” Praise God. Wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. So either glory, let him glory in the Lord. So when it says He was made under us sanctification, we have been sanctified in our spirit as believers. We are as sanctified as we’ll ever be.
It’s it’s interesting. I think if he just gave that poll to the average person…
They don’t understand it.
Well, I think a lot of Christians would probably check the sinner box and probably a lot of non-Christians would check the saint. Well, I’m a good person. I wanna check that box. That’s why I don’t need Jesus. I’m already good enough.
And you know what? You’re not. That’s why the law was given to show you that you’re in sin. But as believers, we’re not to go back to the law to be justified, because we’re justified by faith. Now in our spirit, I said this, we have to understand. In our spirit, we’re sanctified. In our soul, our mind, will, and emotions. We’ve gotta renew our mind. We’ve gotta submit our will to the will of God just like Jesus did when He walked on the Earth. We’ve gotta get our emotions under the authority of the word of God. And then in our body, Paul says this in 1 Thessalonians four. He says, “This is the will of God. Even your sanctification, that everyone would know how to possess his vessel in sanctification in honor.” So I like to say this, my spirit has been sanctified and your spirit was sanctified the moment that you were born again. The moment that you believed on Jesus, your sanctified by the blood, your soul is being sanctified. It’s a process of renewing your mind and your body we trust it’s gonna be delivered when Jesus comes again. Now he says, “This is the will of God, your sanctification. You know how to keep your body right now, right here.” So don’t let your body rule over you. You rule over it by the spirit of God. And that’s what he goes on to talk about here in Roman seven, he says, or Roman 6:9. He says, knowing there’s some things again, we gotta know. “That Christ was raised from the dead, dies no more. Death has no more dominion over Him, for in that He died. He died onto sin once.” Man, some people get that. They just living on the backside the cross, dying over and over and over again. And there is an aspect of that we could show in the scripture, but too many people just live there and God doesn’t want you to live there. And when I got filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to understand who I was in Christ, I was raised in an old church like that. You get saved, repent, don’t sin, don’t sin, don’t sin., repent, repent, repent, don’t sin. And it’s just this constant battle. But man, when I got filled with the Holy Ghost and begin to understand that I was the righteousness of God in Christ, that I’m sanctified by the blood of Jesus. My life began to be transformed and I lived better today accidentally than I did on purpose before I knew those things. Glory to God, it’s marvelous revelation. So he’s saying, listen, you gotta know some things. And he said, likewise in verse 11, “Reckon yourselves to be dead into sin, but alive unto God through Jesus our Lord.” And that word reckon means count it done. In other words, God says, I reckon you’re righteous. So you need to reckon you’re righteous. Amen. Now that word in the Greek Aaron is logizomai. Now you talked about what that means.
Yeah. It’s an accounting term. So we use that a lot in Romans four, that authorities used a lot. So it’s counted. It’s an accounting term. You count something as a credit, count something as a debt. So here you are to do some accounting.
Amen. So God has accounted you righteous. You need to account yourself righteous. You need to see yourself the way God sees you in Christ. And if you can see that it will change the way you live. We’re gonna be back right after this and finish up Romans chapter six. So stay tuned. Friends I’ve been teaching from my series on Romans. The Revelation of Righteousness. Romans is actually my favorite Book of the Bible. And I teach this class. I’ve been teaching it for years at Charis Bible College in Woodland Park with Andrew Wommack. And so I’m teaching about the gospel is the revelation of righteousness. You wanna get ahold of this? I have a book on it. I also have a four CD, many teaching on it. And then most recently we’ve done the 16 teaching USB that you can get just as we’ve been teaching it here on television. And so you wanna get ahold of this revelation. If you get ahold of this revelation, it will change your life. So Romans, the Revelation of Righteousness. Thanks so much for being with us today. I’m sure that you’ll enjoy this great teaching and you’ll wanna share it with your friends, blessings. We appreciate you. Praise the Lord. We’ve been teaching in Roman chapter six and we’ve been talking about, we don’t live in sin since we’ve received the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. We left the reign of sin and death. We came into the reign of grace and righteousness and we said, there’s four reasons. Now we talked about in the first 11 verses, the first two of them. The first one is we are dead to sin and dead people don’t struggle with sin. The second thing we talked about, is we’re set free from it. Praise God. So we’re dead to it and free from it. Now we’re gonna talk about the third one. And that is that we have authority over sin. You’ve got authority over sin and lust, just like you have authority over sickness and poverty. And you need to understand that as a believer. And he says this in verse 12, through verse 14, he says, “Do not let sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in the lust there.” Now what is understood in verse 12 Aaron? When it says, “Let not sin reign in your mortal body.” What is understood?
I don’t know.
The subject. You, you don’t let sin reign. You have authority. So he says, “Don’t let sin. You don’t let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey it unless they’re up.” He says in verse 13, “Neither yield your members as instruments of unrighteousness. So your eyes, your ears, your hands, your feet, but yield yourselves.” So when God comes around, you surrender. But when the devil comes around and sin comes around, you run just like Joseph man. When Potiphar’s wife got after him, he ran. Hallelujah. If that’s what you gotta do, get out of there baby.
Yeah, I really like that terminology in Roman 6:13, talking about instruments of unrighteousness or instruments of righteousness. I have a background in classical music. I play flute. I actually have a doctorate in music. And when I was gonna school for music, I taught a lot of students how to play flute. And some of these beginning flute students didn’t take very good care of their instruments. One of my students dropped her flute right on the metal music stand in the middle of a lesson. I had another student tell me a story about their friend who played saxophone, who actually left it out in the driveway and their parents backed over it with their SUVs. So they were yielding their instrument to the unrighteousness. I wouldn’t give them my professional flute that’s valued over $10,000. I wouldn’t give this instrument to yield it to them. And you are an instrument of righteousness. So you shouldn’t yield yourself to the devil. You shouldn’t yield yourself to sin. You should yield yourself to Jesus, to righteousness.
And he says, “You yield yourselves to God.” So when righteousness comes, surrender to God, when Jesus come surrender to God, when good things come, the fruit of the spirit love, joy, peace, long suffering, generous, goodness, faith.
Now the devil, if you just yield yourself to the sin and the devil, he’s gonna run over you like a SUV over a saxophone.
But when the works of the flesh come, adultery, fornication, lasciviousness. That’s all kinds of sexual sin, hatred, emulation, strife, envy, bitterness. All these different sins. Don’t yield yourself to that and such like you said. In Galatians 5:16 through verse…
Seen believers get consumed with jealousy before. And it’s like a consuming thing when people yield to themselves.
It’s a terrible thing. We deal with it. A lot of it. And so he says in verse 14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you.” Why? Because you’re not under the law, but under grace. I did not get a revelation of grace, until I was 30 years old. I had been pastoring for six going on seven years, nearly seven years I’d been pastoring. And Andrew Wommack came and preached for us in Kit Carson, Colorado. And he made a statement that changed my life. And he talked about, it doesn’t matter how much you’ve broken God’s law. It doesn’t matter. It’s like a plate glass window. It doesn’t matter whether you shot a BB through it or drove a Mac truck through it. It is broken. And the only way that it can be perfect is if you replace it. And that’s what James 2:10 says, it says, “If we offend the law in one point, we are guilty of the whole thing.” And so when I got that, it’s just like I got a revelation. And the revelation of grace has revolutionized my life. And I completely changed. Aaron you were only seven years old and you know what? Your brothers and you have grown up good. You have loved God. You’ve done really well. And mom says that it was like, I completely changed when I got a revelation of grace. And she says, I’m like living with a total different person. And she means that in a very good way. Because before that I was so legalistic and mom doesn’t think if I didn’t get a revelation of grace, she thinks that you boys would’ve really struggled, but you guys grew up. You’ve done well, you’re all serving Jesus. You’re all have good marriages. You have good homes. Y’all keep good jobs. And your brothers… Y’all went to secular colleges. And none of you struggled with sin while you were in college. None of you struggle with this crazy worldly mentality. You know what? Because the gospel works and he says, “Sin doesn’t have dominion over you, for you’re not under the law, but under grace. What then?” He goes on to say in verse 15, we’re gonna have to hurry a little bit. He says, “Because we’re not into the law, but under grace again. Shall we sin because we’re not under the law, but grace? God forbid. Absolutely not. Don’t you know to whom you yield yourself servants obey, his servants you are to whom you obey. If you surrender to the devil, you’ll become a servant of the devil, whether of sin unto death or obedience under righteousness. But God be thanked that you were,” past tense. “Before you were born again, the servants of sin, but you obeyed from the heart, that form of doctrine, the word of God, the gospel, which was delivered to you. Being then made free from sin. You became the servants of righteousness.” So I’m no longer a sin slave anymore. I am a servant of righteousness. He says, “I speak after the manner of men, because of the weakness of your flesh, the infirmity or weakness of your flesh. For as you have yielded your members, servants to uncleanliness,” he says, “Into inequity, sin or rebellion leads to more rebellion even so now yield your members, surrender to righteousness, servants to righteousness.” Which leads under holiness. And again, you’re made holy when you believe on Jesus, you’re made holy by the blood, but be holy. Praise God. Let the righteousness of God live through you. He says, look at this in verse 20, “For when we were the servants of sin,” past tense. “You were free from righteousness.” When you were a sinner, you were all sinner in your spirit. You’re either 100% sin or you’re 100% saint. You’re either 100% sinful or you’re 100% righteous. If you die, you’re gonna go to hell if you didn’t believe on Jesus, if you weren’t made righteous. And if you believed on Jesus and you’re made righteousness, if you’re born again, you’re gonna go to Heaven. And it’s not because of what you did. It’s because of who you believed. It’s because of what Jesus did. He says, “What fruit did you have?” He’s talking about before we were saved in those things that you’re now ashamed of. I’m ashamed of things that I did before I got saved. I’m even ashamed of some things that I did before I got a revelation of grace, but he says this to the end. He says, “For the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin and become the servants of God. You have your fruit under holiness.” When you understand the grace of God, when you understand righteousness, it will not cause you to sin more. It will cause you to sin less because you will find out that in your spirit, you are sinless. That’s who God made you. And when you understand that and identify with it, you’ll start living the righteous life of Jesus out. He goes on, he says, “You have your fruit to hold this and the everlasting life.” Our relationship with God in eternity. “For the wages of sin is death.” Now we’ve all worked and earned those wages. But since we got saved, he says, “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.” So we have a gift of God. We have eternal life through Jesus. Aaron, why don’t you say something to the people?
Yeah. Yeah. I just love that last verse for the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. Or wages is talking about something that you earn and sin doesn’t earn great things, but we have a free gift from God. It’s not something that you can earn. I like that. Says it’s a gift of God, eternal life, righteousness through Jesus Christ. It’s a gift from God. It’s not a wage. It’s not something that you deserve or something that you earn. It’s something that’s freely given.
